Bến Nhà Rồng, or the Dragon House Wharf, is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most significant historical sites. It is revered by Vietnamese people as the starting point of President Ho Chi Minh’s quest for national independence and now serves as a museum dedicated to his revolutionary life.

I. Historical & Cultural Significance

  • The Departure Point: This site is historically crucial as the exact location where the young Nguyễn Tất Thành (later known as Ho Chi Minh) embarked on a French freighter in 1911 as a kitchen helper. His goal was to travel the world to find a path to national liberation for Vietnam.

  • The Ho Chi Minh Museum: Since 1979, the building has been converted into the Ho Chi Minh Museum – Ho Chi Minh City Branch, housing a vast collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs that chronicle the life and revolutionary activities of the esteemed leader.

  • Architecture: The building itself is a striking blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles. Built by the French in as the headquarters of the Messageries Maritimes shipping company, its most notable feature is the roof, adorned with two ceramic dragons, which gives the wharf its “Dragon House” (Nhà Rồng) nickname.

II. Visitor Experience (What to See and Do)

  • Exhibition Halls: Explore the comprehensive exhibits detailing Ho Chi Minh’s travels, his political evolution, and his connection to the Southern Vietnamese people. Information is typically provided in both Vietnamese and English.

  • Historical Artifacts: View personal effects, documents, and photographs that offer a close look at the leader’s simple life and monumental legacy.

  • Saigon River View: Take a moment to appreciate the view of the Saigon River from the wharf grounds, imagining the historical scene of Ho Chi Minh’s departure over a century ago.

Bến Nhà Rồng – Bảo tàng Hồ Chí Minh is a museum worth visiting if you’re in Saigon. It’s located right by the river, which makes the setting even more special. Inside, you can learn a lot about the history of Hồ Chí Minh and the city itself. I spent some time reading through the displays and it was both interesting and informative. The museum gives a good sense of the past and is definitely worth adding to your list when exploring the city.

Although most of the display is in Vietnamese, the ticket office give you an information pamphlet in English. Most visitors are Vietnamese. The museum is informative and gives you the Vietnamese view, not the American view of world events at the time. People's love of Ho Chi Minh is clearly illustrated.

Vietnamese are great people but they need to get better at making museums. There is no real historical objectivity here but rather a cult of personality. Many pictures of HCM … playing volleyball, growing corn, etc … who cares ? Teach us real history with good and bad sides of the guy.
Plus many parts are in Vietnamese only. Do you want tourists to visit or not ?
Finally, structure is often hard in their museum. When you ask the staff where to begin, they are not even sure themselves…
This museum could be great but I has to be thought again.

Nice museum, well worth to visit. Normally free but the guy at the entrance may ask for a very small amount of money. The museum also has a balcony with a nice view.

For a free exhibit/museum with a beautiful view of the harbor, you can’t really beat that. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the pictures that depict the history of Ho Chi Minh. Vietnamese and English tour guides are offered, and the one we had was informative and displayed great time management skills. She was not too fast or slow. She led our group throughout the building with ease. I can see where others may be confused as to why there is no proper “flow” or timeline these photos are displayed in the rooms, but I still enjoyed my visit. After all, it is a free attraction site so I cannot complain. Just be mindful there is no AC and only fans circulating the hot, humid air so I suggest bringing portable fans to help keep you cool. Other than that, the scenery, landscape, and history of this place are not bad at all! There’s also an ice cream vendor outside the exhibit so I was able to enjoy that and cool off while leaving
