The Hanoi Flag Tower, or Kỳ Đài Hà Nội, is a centuries-old military monument and one of the capital’s few structures that survived the destruction during the French colonial era. Standing over meters tall, it is a potent symbol of Vietnam’s enduring independence and national pride. The tower is located within the grounds of the Vietnam Military History Museum.

I. History & Symbolism

  • Construction (1805–1812): The tower was built during the Nguyễn Dynasty, serving as an observation post within the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. Its primary function was military, not for worship, which is why the French did not demolish it (unlike many other parts of the citadel).

  • Symbol of Liberation (1954): The tower gained its greatest symbolic value on October , when the Vietnamese national flag was first officially flown from its top, marking the liberation of Hanoi from French colonial rule.

  • A Witness to History: The Flag Tower has stood firm for over years, having witnessed the tumultuous changes of the and centuries, making it a powerful monument to the city’s resilience.

II. Architecture & Visitor Experience

  • Structure: The tower is composed of three pyramid-shaped tiered basements and a main octagonal tower shaft, totaling in height (over with the flagpole).

  • Viewing Platform (Climbing the Tower): The interior features a -step spiral staircase leading to the top chamber, which has eight windows offering views of the surrounding area. Note for Visitors: While the staircase exists, access to the very top is sometimes restricted for tourists, though access to the base and mid-level terraces is usually permitted. Check at the entrance if climbing the tower is allowed on the day of your visit.

  • Location: The tower is a key highlight of a visit to the Vietnam Military History Museum, as it is located on the museum grounds. Many tourists buy a combined ticket to explore both the tower and the museum’s extensive outdoor display of war matériel (tanks, planes, and artillery).

An awesome sight to behold. It has that original structure and the oldcwornout paint and mastic colour just makes it really authentic and evoke a deep sense of pride for the Vietnamese people. I like it.

For the 100k entry price this was well worth a visit. Sprawling area with exhibitions along the way showing artefacts that have been excavated over time showing how the ancient citadel was built and occupied. Worth a visit.

The flagtower is within the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. When I visited on 3 June, there were no one over there. Great place to take photos for social media postings.

There is a small cafe beside the flagtower, but seems to be no one there as well.

One of the impressive and known landmarks in Hanoi. However, there were no other noteworthy exhibits or places to visit on this section besides the tower. Think of it as a rest stop.
