The Cat Co beaches are a complex of three small, beautiful coves—Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, and Cat Co 3—located just a short distance from the center of Cat Ba Town on Cat Ba Island. They are the most accessible and well-known beaches on the island, famous for their golden sand, clear water, and dramatic limestone cliff backdrops.

General Overview and The Three Beaches

The three beaches are easily recognizable and are interconnected by a picturesque wooden boardwalk built along the side of the cliffs, making it easy and enjoyable to walk between them.

Cat Co 1 (The Lively Hub):

Vibe: The largest, most spacious, and most vibrant of the three. It is often busy with local and international tourists.

Best For: Families, groups, and anyone looking for a lively atmosphere, readily available amenities, and social interaction.

Amenities: Features the most comprehensive facilities, including restaurants, bars, sunbed rentals, changing rooms, and water sports activities.

Cat Co 2 (The Tranquil Retreat):

Vibe: The smallest and quietest cove, offering a more serene and secluded atmosphere.

Best For: Couples, solo travelers, and those seeking peaceful sunbathing, reading, or simply listening to the waves.

Amenities: Facilities are more limited than Cat Co 1, offering basic sunbeds and a quiet café.

Cat Co 3 (The Modern Spot):

Vibe: Often considered the most modern and developed, as it is adjacent to a major resort complex.

Best For: Visitors who prefer professional services, resort facilities, and a mix of relaxation and water-based activities like jet-skiing and canoeing (which are more common here due to slightly stronger waves).

Culture and Nearby Attractions

Historical Connection: The area is close to the Cannon Fort (Pháo đài Thần công), a historical military vantage point situated above sea level. This fort offers the best panoramic views of Cat Ba Town, the Cat Co beaches, and the stunning Lan Ha Bay.

Best Time to Visit: The peak season is summer, from April to October, when the weather is ideal for swimming. Note that the beaches can get very crowded during this time, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Safety Note: Visitors are strongly advised to avoid swimming after due to high tides and strong currents that can become dangerous after sunset.

Practical Visitor Information

Location: Just a few hundred meters southeast of Cat Ba Town center.

How to Get There: Easily accessible by foot (a to -minute walk depending on the specific beach), by electric car (taxi), or motorbike taxi from Cat Ba Town.

It's a well maintained beach with a bar on it, it would benefit from a nice beach restaurant too! Parking is confusing as we turned up on a bike and was told we had to park down the hill where we were charged 10k for the privilege.

All I gotta say is that if everyone (even the locals) claims this is the best beach out of the 3, you’d best stay with this beach as the other two must be worse. Because even though reviews said this place was well maintained and clean, I saw several trash laying about. Additionally, the sand felt rough and the closest layers were crusted with broken seashells and rocks. But maybe all of this debris was because it was closer to the hotel side as when I walked to the mountain parts, it did seem a little bit more clean. Water was also not that clear and pretty as seen in other pics, but to be fair, we did go when it was cloudy and cold. Overall, not that sad I missed out on swimming here.

We tried all three Cat Co beaches and number 3 was definitely the best. Access is through the hotel security gate. Note that they charge a small fee for scooter parking and also for use of restrooms and showers. The beach was very clean and well maintained. The soft, golden sands stretch all the way to the beginning of the rock path which offers a breathtaking view of the shoreline as well as open horizon. Waters were virtually crystal clear, but it all depends on the current winds.
There is a wide lounge area with plenty of shaded sun beds and a small bar. We did not use them but assume there is a fee. We visited in January and I can imagine this place is more crowded during high season.

Very nice and clean beach. Rent a sun bed for a comfortable day and be sure to check out the little walk up the rock, great views!

Don’t forget to bring some food if you’re planning to stay all day, there is a bar but no food options.

This beach is only for a photo opportunity, against the backdrop of beautiful limestones jutting from the sea. There is one hotel resort with a bar restaurant where you can get drinks or food. A Hanoi beer is 35k dong and a fresh cold coconut is 60 dong. The beach is maintained, but the sea is brown-grey and murky. The waves can be big. It’s not really for swimming at all, just for splashing about to cool down on a hot day if you don’t mind the unclean water. It might as well be the seaside in the south coast of the UK! Motorbike parking fee was 10k in 2024. It wasn’t crazy crowded around 2 pm over the Vietnam liberation holiday as expected and we were happy with that. The path to cat co 1 beach was pleasant and an easy walk up and down the steps and pavements- would be nicer on a cool day.
