My Son Sanctuary – The Sacred Land of the Chams

The My Son Sanctuary (Thanh dia My Son) is a mesmerizing complex of Hindu temple ruins nestled in a lush green valley, now a key historical attraction of the expanded Da Nang metropolitan area. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, My Son offers visitors a profound look into the artistry and spiritual life of the Champa Kingdom, which flourished in Central Vietnam for over nine centuries (4th to 13th centuries). It is an essential half-day trip for anyone staying in Da Nang or Hoi An.

I. History and Cultural Significance

  • The Champa Kingdom: My Son was the political and religious center of the Champa Kingdom, which was heavily influenced by Indian Hinduism. The temples were primarily dedicated to the worship of the god Shiva, known locally as Bhadreshvara.

  • Unique Architecture: Over 70 temples were originally built here, mainly using red brick. The Cham builders mastered a unique, still-mysterious construction technique where the bricks were carved before being fired and joined without visible mortar, showcasing advanced ancient engineering.

  • War Damage and Preservation: The site endured heavy bombing during the Vietnam War (with the Viet Cong using the area as a base). Restoration efforts, often in partnership with international bodies, are continuously underway to preserve the remaining 20 structures, which represent the finest examples of Cham architecture.

    • Private Car/Taxi: Offers flexibility for early morning or late afternoon visits.

    • Bus: Local bus Route #06 runs from Da Nang to My Son (check schedule for latest details).

  • Best Time for Photos: Sunrise offers the most dramatic and atmospheric lighting for photography.

We had a great time there. It is a beautiful historic site and truly deserves the status of UNESCO world heritage. The place is well organised and the paths are well maintained and easy to walk. A lot of money is spent in keeping the place up and in renovating the damages of the Vietnam war.

I would recommend going there with a guide. It was truly a great experience to get the information from a local. The scenery is als great.

We had a great time looking around these beautiful temples. Paths are good and there is a tram for the longest part of the walk. We arrived at 3pm which was not crowded and cooler (although still hot in July!). There were no guides available as the last one had just been booked so maybe go a little earlier if you want a tour guide

A Thai Perspective⭐️⚡️
My Son Sanctuary is often seen as a fascinating and amazing ancient site by most Westerners. However, for me, as a Thai person, it isn't particularly new or different from the similar cultures we have in Thailand 🇹🇭.
It's extremely hot there, and there aren't any air-conditioned rooms to take a break in. I highly recommend coming well-prepared. Bring an umbrella, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a portable fan.

The place is phenomenal. I would suggest wear comfortable shoes and clothes because you have to walk a lot. The ruins make you wonder of how beautiful this place would’ve been in all its glory! There are lotus ponds adding to its scenic value. However I would appreciate if the tour guides would learn more about this place and its culture. But this trip is worth everything. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vietnam. The best part is they also have benches for people to sit and mini cafes for food and water. A very well thought and well maintained.

Beautiful complex of ancient ruins. Drinks and basic food available to purchase at multiple vendors around the site. Take a tour guide or do the self-guided tour via the My Son app (requires in-app purchase of $5 for the QR code content). Take sun protection and allow at least 1.5 hours. Motorbike parking at the entrance, free or 5,000 VND. Regular and free electric vehicles will transport you from the parking areas to the site.
