Cam Thanh Coconut Village: A Mini Mekong Delta in Central Vietnam

Cam Thanh Coconut Village (Lang Dua Cam Thanh), also widely known as the Bay Mau Coconut Forest (Rung Dua Bay Mau), stands as one of Central Vietnam’s most unique eco-tourism destinations. It is located just a short distance—about 5 to 7 kilometers—southeast of Hoi An Ancient Town. The village offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the riverine life and wartime history of the region. Visitors flock here primarily for the signature activity: a thrilling ride through the dense water coconut (Nipa palm) forest on a traditional Vietnamese basket boat.

I. Ecosystem, History, and Culture

The forest spans over 100 hectares, defined by a unique ecosystem where the Thu Bon River meets the sea, creating brackish water ideal for Nipa palms. This environment provides a rich, tranquil landscape often compared to the famed Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam.

  • Historical Significance: The dense, winding channels provided a strategic natural fortress known as the “Green Wall” during the Vietnam War. Local forces utilized the thick foliage for shelter, allowing them to evade enemy detection and launch guerrilla attacks. You can ask your local guide for stories about this heroic chapter.

  • Local Livelihood: The local community depends on the palms for construction materials and daily life. They skillfully use the large leaves for roofing and crafting.

II. Must-Do Activities and Unique Experiences

Tourists enjoy a variety of interactive, culture-rich activities here.

  1. Basket Boat Ride (Thuyen Thung): A local oarsman skillfully navigates the round bamboo boats through the coconut canals for about an hour. During the journey, they will demonstrate traditional fishing techniques, such as casting nets, and they will craft charming souvenirs like rings, watches, and locusts from coconut leaves for you.

  2. Basket Boat Spinning Performance: Witness the incredible balance and agility of the boatmen as they perform high-speed spinning (or “dancing”) of the basket boats, often accompanied by energetic music. This exhilarating spectacle draws large crowds and creates memorable photos.

  3. Crab Fishing and Eco-Activities: You can participate in catching small crabs using simple rods. Many local operators also combine the boat ride with cooking classes or cycling tours through the adjacent peaceful villages.

III. Essential Visitor Details

Plan your visit with this practical information to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

  • Location: Cam Thanh Commune (Xa Cam Thanh), Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province.

  • Getting There: Tourists typically reach the village via a short taxi, Grab, or motorbike ride from Hoi An Ancient Town.

  • Operating Hours: The forest is generally open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.

  • Fees: The total cost involves two separate fees:

    • Entrance Fee: Visitors pay an entrance ticket to the ecological area, usually around 30,000 VND per person.

    • Basket Boat Rental: The cost to hire a basket boat (which accommodates two adults) ranges from 150,000 VND to 200,000 VND per boat for the one-hour experience. Always confirm the price before you start the ride.

  • Best Time to Visit: Schedule your visit for the early morning (before 9:30 AM) or late afternoon (after 3:30 PM) to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds, resulting in a more serene experience. Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen for protection.

Very happy experience! Thuong and Van rowed the coconut boat on the peaceful river. It is the mid-autumn festival we saw the full moon! Thuong and Van even made grasshoppers and origami flowers using coconut leaves for us! At last, they span us like crazy on the coconut boat😂. Five star review!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We booked a trip to coconut village via Klook which included a trip down the river in a coconut boat and a lovely 3-course meal. It made for an enjoyable afternoon out. We were also picked up and dropped off at our hotel in An Bang Beach.

Fun but a Little Misleading
My partner and I booked a coconut boat ride at Coconut Village for 150,000 VND for two people, which seemed like a great deal for a promised 45-minute ride. The experience itself was a lot of fun, and the atmosphere was vibrant.
We were a bit disappointed, however, that the actual "ride" part of the tour only lasted about 20-25 minutes. While we did get to see some of the beautiful village scenery, a good portion of the remaining time was spent on entertainment, like karaoke and other activities. While this was enjoyable and the performers were engaging, it wasn't what we had in mind when we booked a boat ride specifically to explore the village.
Overall, it's a great experience if you're looking for some entertainment on the water. Just be aware that the advertised 45 minutes isn't all spent exploring the village by boat.

Beautiful scenery, jovial atmosphere and fun experiences.
The boat ride through the coconut village was made more enjoyable by the hard working rowers chanting. The melody became familiar after minutes and we also accompanied them.
Although we didn't understand each other's languages, we sang together the whole ride.
This made me, as a tourist, feel more bonded with the locals and made this experience more precious and unique than most touristy activities.
There were also performers who did stunts with their boats that was very exciting to watch.
