Ban Co Peak (Dinh Ban Co): The Majestic Rooftop of Da Nang

Ban Co Peak, often translated as “Chessboard Peak,” stands as the highest point open to visitors on the magnificent Son Tra Peninsula (Ban Dao Son Tra). The peak offers travelers an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire Da Nang cityscape, the Han River, the towering bridges, and the vast expanse of the East Sea (Bien Dong). Standing at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level, this destination is rightly nicknamed “Da Nang’s Rooftop.”

I. Legend and Cultural Significance

Ban Co Peak derives its evocative name from a fascinating local legend, which adds a layer of mystical charm to the natural beauty.

  • The Chessboard Legend: Local folklore suggests that two celestial beings, or fairies, descended here to play an intense game of Chinese chess. Their legendary game supposedly lasted for days without a victor. Eventually, one fairy lost his concentration after being distracted by beautiful fairy ladies bathing on a nearby beach (Tien Sa Beach), leading to his defeat. Today, a small statue of the losing immortal, De Thich, sits beside a stone chessboard at the summit, inviting visitors to contemplate the story.

  • Symbolic Viewpoint: The peak functions as a symbolic vantage point, providing a sweeping perspective that encompasses the modern development of Da Nang City, the natural curve of the bay, and the distant Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son).

II. Visitor Experience and Best Times to Visit

The main attraction at Ban Co Peak remains the spectacular scenery, which transforms throughout the day.

  1. Panoramic Photography: Capture the sheer scale of the landscape. The clear skies allow for incredible photos of the skyline, especially the prominent bridges like Thuan Phuoc Bridge. Visitors should bring wide-angle lenses to fully capture the extensive panorama.

  2. Sunrise and Sunset Hunting: Experience the magic of the sun’s golden hour. Many tourists make the early morning ascent to witness the sun rising over the East Sea. Alternatively, arriving in the late afternoon presents a beautiful sunset, painting the sky in vibrant hues over the city lights.

  3. The Journey Itself: The road to the peak is known for its challenging but rewarding nature. It winds steeply through the Son Tra Nature Reserve, passing through lush forests which provide habitat for the rare Red-shanked Douc langurs. Always use a well-maintained geared motorbike or a robust car/jeep for the ascent.

III. Essential Visitor Information

Use this practical information to plan your climb to the peak.

  • Location: Ban Co Peak is situated on the Son Tra Peninsula, Tho Quang Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang City.

  • Getting There: The peak is located approximately 15 kilometers from the city center. Tourists most commonly use motorbikes (with caution due to steep slopes) or guided tours (like jeep tours).

  • Entry Fee: Visiting Ban Co Peak is free of charge. However, a small fee may apply for parking near the base or access checkpoints.

  • Operating Hours: The peak is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Authorities advise visitors to start their descent before 5:00 PM as the mountain road becomes extremely dark and dangerous after nightfall.

  • Note: The Son Tra Peninsula is a nature reserve. Please respect the environment; take all trash with you and refrain from feeding the wildlife.

Amazing spot to overlook the city. I came one at 7:30am and again later at sunset. I drove a manual bike, I believe semi automatic is capable as well as after barriers it gets quite steep.

Instead of driving to the summit, I highly recommend walking. It’s around 15 kilometers round trip along a well-maintained and scenic road. You’ll be surrounded by birdsong and fluttering butterflies the entire way. In this case, the journey truly outshines the destination.

In 2018, my current wife and I went on our first trip together and came here on the recommendation of a local. The hotel staff told me that there were many monkeys on the mountain. We rented motorcycles and went up the mountain, but didn't see any monkeys :/

However, you can overlook the city of Da Nang from here, so it's still a great place to enjoy the view (photo taken in 2018).

Although it was a hot and sunny day, the peak was still foggy, giving it a mystical vibe. We could catch glimpses of Da Nang city below, but the view couldn’t be fully captured on camera. There is ample parking for both cars and bikes. You can even bike up close to the top, and the final climb is just 2–3 minutes up cement-floored stairs. A quick and easy visit with a unique atmosphere.
