Tân An Market: Experience the Authentic Rhythm of Cần Thơ Life

Tân An Market (Chợ Tân An) is not a glamorous tourist trap; instead, it provides one of the most authentic and immersive market experiences in Cần Thơ. Locals recognize it as the city’s largest and oldest ground wholesale market, serving as a primary distribution hub for fresh agricultural and aquatic products across the region. Visitors should explore this market to see the real, bustling rhythm of the Mekong Delta’s commerce.

Address: 71 Đ. Hai Bà Trưng, Tân An, Ninh Kiều, Cần Thơ, Vietnam.

I. Market Overview and Atmosphere

The market occupies a sizable area and divides its goods into various dedicated sections. This organization allows you to navigate the bustling stalls effectively.

  • Wholesale Center: Tân An functions as the region’s main terrestrial gateway for goods, comparable to the Cai Rang Floating Market’s role on the river. It supplies many smaller markets and eateries throughout the city.

  • Vibrant Local Life: The market operates all day, but it truly comes alive in the early morning as local vendors and restaurant owners come to purchase their daily supplies. Expect a lively, sometimes chaotic, atmosphere filled with the sounds of commerce and the colors of fresh produce. We recommend visiting in the morning to catch the market at its most dynamic.

II. What to Buy and Eat

Tân An Market specializes in raw ingredients, providing a sensory feast of the Mekong Delta’s bounty. Food lovers find a treasure trove of fresh products here.

  • Fresh Produce: Sellers display an incredible variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, and local rice products. You find high-quality, inexpensive goods directly from nearby farms.

  • Seafood and Meats: The seafood section is particularly vibrant, featuring fresh fish, shrimp, snails, and shellfish sourced from the Hậu River and local aquaculture. The market is an excellent place to witness the diversity of the Delta’s aquatic life.

  • Local Street Food: While the market’s main focus is raw materials, you discover small stalls selling prepared local dishes and quick snacks. Take the opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive and authentic local breakfast or snack, such as Bánh Xèo (savory pancake) or Bánh Khọt (mini savory pancakes).

III. Visitor Information and Tips

Visiting Tân An Market offers a genuine cultural immersion, but it requires preparation.

  • Operating Hours: The market operates throughout the day, typically from early morning (around 5:00 AM) until late evening. The peak trading period occurs in the morning.

  • Entrance Fee: The market does not charge an admission fee.

  • Tips for Tourists: Wear comfortable shoes, as the floor can be wet and busy. Bring small denominations of Vietnamese Dong (VND) for quick purchases. Practice polite bargaining, especially if you buy in larger quantities, although prices are generally fixed for small items. Keep valuables secure, as in any busy public market.

  • Contact: Tân An Market operates as a network of individual vendors; therefore, no central telephone number is provided. Consult your accommodation for specific local directions.

Such a good experience that gives a really good history of coffee and Vietnam. The 3 brothers make the experience really good and I love the family connection. definitely recommend if you are in Hoi An and want to properly experience something not touristy but original and fun.

Amazing coffee workshop experience with the sweetest teachers, music and good vibes. We made 5 types of coffee and you can also do this if you don’t tolerate cow’s milk because they use vegan condensed milk as default and then you can ask for vegan milk. Each coffee tasted amazing and they also give you all the recipes and a coffee filter as a gift. It takes 2 hours and costs 350,000 which is such a bargain ☕️

This class went WAY beyond our expectations.

Making 5 coffees, all with a style we are not used to in the UK, with delightful hosts (Yen and Bieber... Bieber in particular was hilarious).

We were there almost 2 hours and they also gave a small gift to take. Awesome activity to do - a MUST TRY, especially if you haven't had egg, coconut, or salted coffee.
