A Dazzling Pink Landmark in HCMC

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, famously known as Tân Định Church, instantly captures your attention. Its unforgettable, vivid salmon-pink façade makes it immediately recognizable. Workers applied this cheerful color during a major renovation in 1957. Therefore, the church stands out sharply against the city’s muted tones. Locals suggest the rosy hue symbolizes God’s love and the community’s resilience. Consequently, the Pink Church has become a global icon and a top photographed landmark in Vietnam. Plan your visit for the early morning or late afternoon; the soft sunlight beautifully enhances the rosy glow, creating stunning photos.

A Deep History Built on Three Styles

French colonists constructed this landmark between 1870 and 1876. In fact, it ranks as one of the oldest and the second-largest church in Ho Chi Minh City, only trailing the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. The architecture cleverly combines Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles. The tall main tower dominates the structure. It soars over 52 meters (170 feet) high, topped with a bronze cross. Furthermore, this tower holds five massive bells, weighing 5.5 tons in total. Historically, the church’s founder, Father Donatien Éveillard, pioneered social work. He established an adjacent orphanage and a religious publishing house to teach trades to disadvantaged children.

Visiting the Active Parish

Tân Định remains a busy, active parish. It serves as a vital spiritual hub for the local Catholic community. Therefore, visitors must maintain respect for its primary religious purpose. You can admire the exterior and the peaceful courtyard without an entry fee. However, the church generally restricts interior access to parishioners and those attending a Mass. Authorities usually do not permit tourists inside during non-service hours to preserve the space’s sanctity. Finally, remember to wear modest attire; cover your shoulders and knees before entering the premises. The church sits conveniently at 289 Hai Bà Trưng Street in District 3. This location places you slightly north of the main tourist district, surrounded by authentic local life.

Toilets available.
Inside only opens at 5am & 17:30pm for prayer 🙏🏽 & services 🙏🏽
Parking inside for scooters 🛵 You get given a parking card & pay on exit. I paid 5000, around 14pence in English money for 90 minutes.

When I first visited Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, this was one of the must visit attractions in the midst of a tight-schedule drinking trip. This return trip with my queen is a must to visit! We weren’t lucky to meet the timing to enter and have a look but it’s fun to visit. Something I didn’t notice in 2019 was the Jesus statue that resembles the one in Rio, Brazil and Vung Tau.

Pastel pink, elegant, and gently charming — this beautiful church is truly a sight to behold. Although I couldn’t go inside, its exterior alone is worth the visit. You can’t help but feel the unique charm and sense of style that is so distinctly Vietnamese.

I visited the Tân Định Catholic Church and was immediately struck by its striking pink façade it’s hard to miss and even harder not to admire. The architecture is incredibly well preserved, with intricate white trim details that add elegance and contrast beautifully with the pastel exterior. It’s known for its vivid color, the church was ia popular photo stop for tourists and locals alike. During my visit, I noticed many tour groups arriving to appreciate and photograph the church from various angles.

Unfortunately, the church was closed when I arrived, which was a bit disappointing as I was keen to see the interior. However, even from the outside, it’s a visual delight and definitely worth visiting. The surrounding grounds were tidy and enhanced by religious statues and floral arrangements, adding to the peaceful, reverent atmosphere.

Built in the 1870s during the French colonial period, Tân Định Church is one of the oldest and most iconic Roman Catholic churches in the city. It reflects a blend of Gothic and Romanesque design influences, topped with a towering spire that dominates the streetscape.

If you’re in Ho Chi Minh City and enjoy architecture, photography, or historical landmarks, this is one spot you shouldn’t miss.

Looks nice but is only a spot for photos. During a mass you can't go inside the premises. But even if you can go behind the gate you can't enter and look inside. At 4 pm on this Friday they closed the gate. If you are still interested in going half around :)

The church itself is beautiful and stunning. I combined the visit with a stop in the Café opposite the church. Stunning view, chill vibes and wifi there ;)
