Silver Waterfall (Thác Bạc): The Majestic Silver Stream of Sa Pa

Silver Waterfall (Thác Bạc) is a prominent natural landmark in Lào Cai Province, recognized for its towering height and accessibility. Located right beside National Highway 4D, the waterfall plummets an astonishing 200 meters down the mountainside, creating a massive, glistening white column of water. Local people named it Thác Bạc (Silver Waterfall) because the foam and spray look like a stripe of silver shining against the dark rocks and surrounding forest.

Address: San Sả Hồ, Sa Pa, Lao Cai, Vietnam. It sits at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level, near the foot of the magnificent Ô Quy Hồ Pass.

I. The Spectacular Natural Scenery

The waterfall’s proximity to the main road makes it an essential stop for anyone traveling through the region.

  • Impressive Height: The vast volume of water descends multiple tiers, producing a constant, resonant roar that fills the air. Visitors climb the series of stone steps and bridges built along the cascade to reach a halfway viewpoint. This ascent allows travelers to admire the sheer force and scale of the fall from different angles.

  • Stunning Vistas: From the viewing bridge, you capture expansive panoramic views of the surrounding Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range, the vast valleys, and, on clear days, even a glimpse of Sa Pa town. The location is perfect for photographers seeking dramatic landscapes.

II. Access and Essential Visitor Information

The site lies about 12 to 15 kilometers northwest of Sa Pa town center, directly on National Highway 4D, the road that connects to Lai Châu Province.

  • Getting There: Motorbikes are the most popular way to reach the fall, offering a highly scenic 30-minute ride along the winding mountain road. Alternatively, tourists hire a taxi or a private car. Many tour operators offer a convenient package that combines Silver Waterfall with the nearby Love Waterfall and the Ô Quy Hồ Pass summit.

Entrance Fee (Giá vé)

The entrance fee is very affordable, typically around 20,000 VND per adult (prices are subject to change by local authorities). This small fee helps fund the maintenance of the tourist facilities and viewing platforms.

Operating Hours (Giờ mở cửa)

The waterfall is usually open daily from 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the strong water flow season, which usually coincides with the rainy months from May to September, as the cascade looks its most powerful then.

Facilities and Tips

Basic facilities are available near the entrance, including restrooms and stalls selling local handicrafts, snacks, and boiled eggs. Please wear comfortable, non-slip footwear, because the stone path and stairs can become wet and slippery due to the perpetual mist from the waterfall.

30k entry fee - worth it! Really nice waterfall, the steps aren’t too difficult to climb up and it doesn’t go very far up so don’t be put off. There are 2 or 3 sheltered stops on the way up to take nice photos on.

The waterfall emerges from a steep mountain gorge, with water perpetually descending into a rocky basin below. This constant flow generates a resonant acoustic effect, contributing to the area’s immersive natural ambiance.

We totally enjoyed the easy walk up and down the guided steps with handrails for closer look at the waterfall. The whole area is clean and maintained. Minimal entrance fee for visitors.

This waterfall about 12-15km from Sapa town. We took Grab and the waterfall is right by the mountain roads.

Pools in this waterfall tended to be yellow, akin to rust. Not sure if this is due to the natural mineral content, or due to concreate and rebar being incorporated to stabilize the route of the river.

Some pipes were also evident. Not sure, but it could be one of the sources of the water supply for the town. Tap water in the town tastes somewhat metallic.

The waterfall is beautiful and definitely worth a short stop. It’s only about a 15–20 minute walk round-trip from the main road. The path includes a short stair climb, a small bridge, and then a descent back toward the road.

At the entrance there is a small fee: 30k VND for adults and 10k VND for children. If you arrive after 16:30, entry is free.

A quick, easy, and enjoyable visit! 🌿💧

Quick break enjoy the water, bird, leave, and wind sound

Plenty of stairs, proper stairs, and the fence, the gap between each stair is perfect, making the walk enjoyable, you know some waterfalls have no convenience gap making your knees not happy, but this one is NICE

Nice way to have a short break here

Great view once you climb the steep pathway with stairs.
Once up the top, you cross the bridge and walk down the other side.
It's very picturesque and worth stopping. $10,000vnd per person entry.
It's July. it's the wet season now, so the waterfall is flowing fast.
