Bích Động Pagoda: Climb the Green Pearl Grotto of Ninh Bình

Bích Động Pagoda is an iconic spiritual and historical site located within the larger Tam Cốc – Bích Động area of Ninh Bình. Its name, Bích Động, translates to “Green Pearl Grotto,” a title bestowed by Lord Trịnh Sâm in 1774 who was enchanted by its sublime beauty, where ancient temples merge seamlessly with majestic limestone mountains. The pagoda is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking culture and nature.

Address: 6W99+C23, Ninh Hải, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 430000, Vietnam.

I. History and Architectural Marvel

Bích Động boasts a long and fascinating history. The first temple was established here in 1428 during the Lê Dynasty. Later, in 1705, two monks significantly expanded the complex, creating the unique three-tiered structure we see today. This architecture reflects a spiritual journey, ascending the mountainside.

  • Hạ Pagoda (Lower Pagoda): You enter the complex at the mountain’s base, where the Hạ Pagoda stands. This main temple features traditional Vietnamese architectural design, including a prominent five-compartment structure and impressive 4-meter-tall stone columns. A beautiful stone bridge crosses a lotus pond, leading you to the entrance.

  • Trung Pagoda (Middle Pagoda): Climb approximately 120 stone steps to reach the Trung Pagoda, which is uniquely built into a natural cave. This cave-temple blends human construction with the natural rock formation, offering a distinctively mystical atmosphere.

  • Thượng Pagoda (Upper Pagoda): Continue climbing to the summit, where the Thượng Pagoda (also known as Lady Buddha Pagoda) sits. The challenging climb rewards you with a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding rice paddies and karst peaks of Tam Cốc. This upper level offers a peaceful spot for reflection.

II. Essential Visitor Information

Visitors should plan their trip carefully to fully appreciate the site’s beauty and solemnity.

  • Entrance Fee: Accessing the Bích Động Pagoda complex itself is generally free of charge. However, since the pagoda is located within the Tam Cốc – Bích Động Tourist Area, if you choose to take the famous boat ride in Tam Cốc, you must purchase a package ticket for the complex. Adult tickets cost approximately 250,000 VND, which usually includes the boat tour fee.

  • Opening Hours: The pagoda is typically open daily from about 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the largest crowds.

  • Contact/Phone Number: As a general rule, direct contact information for the pagoda is not widely published. For tourism inquiries, please contact the main Ninh Bình Tourism Authority or a local tour operator.

  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time is during the dry season (November to April) for comfortable climbing. For photographers, May to July offers the lush sight of the blooming lotus pond near the entrance.

III. Culture and Visitor Tips

Bích Động Pagoda remains an active place of worship. Consequently, visitors should wear modest attire, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered. The climb requires comfortable walking shoes, and you should allow at least one hour to explore all three levels and the caves fully. The serene environment and rich history make Bích Động a powerful spiritual landmark in Ninh Bình.

Went to Bich Dong Pagoda with a tour guide and was good explaining that history of this place. There are 3 temples to visit, the walk to the temple can be steep and may be slippery during raining season. You will have to walk into a bat cave to get to the second temple. The view from the top temple is awesome well worth the walk up. Not too high just a moderate climb up.

A place worth visiting, an ancient pagoda first built in the 15th century nestled in a serene tropical hill/ mountain. As part of the journey to the 3rd level you move through a cave that has amazing structures. Surrounding the ancient structure were calm waters of water lilies which unfortunately bloom mainly in the morning.

We drove to Ninh Binh from Hanoi which is roughly a 1 hour 45 drive. The pagoda is then only a few mins drive from Tam Coc. On a Sunday the crowd was decent. No entry tickets required and as always, be respectfully quiet visiting a sacred place for locals.

When we arrived it started drizzling - if you do hit wet weather, so be careful as the stone steps are slippery.

Bich Dong Pagoda is a beautiful and sacred temple complex with a long history and calm atmosphere. There are three pagodas built on different levels of the mountain, surrounded by lush greenery, lotus ponds, and cool fresh air — a perfect place to find peace and quiet.

You can see a few monks and local people praying, as well as elderly ladies keeping the temple clean and selling small souvenirs nearby. The entrance is free, and parking costs only 20,000 VND.

Next to the pagoda, there’s a path leading up to “Hanh Phuc Lake” (Happiness Lake) — try climbing up for a lovely view of the mountains and countryside!

A truly authentic and spiritual stop in Tam Coc, perfect for those who love culture, nature, and tranquility.

This is a nice filler because it's completely free to get inside. There are lots of vendors right outside that offer to sell you goods & to park your bike for $$. Get food & drink at the Gao restaurant & park there instead. The food there is amazing. The pagoda is cool because you hike up some stairs to get to cave with bats and views.

Beautiful temple - the best bit is along the path through the 'Parking Area'. There is a short climb up some steps and then it opens out onto a lake, which is absolutely stunning. Very few people head this way - had it all to myself even when the pagoda was busy.

Free parking at the cafes / restaurants - DO NOT park in the 'Parking Area' as you will have to pay.
