The Lao Bao International Border Gate (Cửa khẩu quốc tế Lao Bảo) stands as a monumental landmark in Hướng Hóa District, Quảng Trị Province. This gate is more than just a checkpoint; it represents a crucial connection point between Vietnam and the outside world. Specifically, it sits directly on National Highway 9 (QL9), an artery that stretches westward into Savannakhet Province, Laos, where the corresponding checkpoint is the Densavan International Border Gate.

Historical and Economic Significance

The history of this area ties closely to the road it sits on. The French colonial administration first constructed National Highway 9 in the 1930s to link the Vietnamese coast with the Mekong River. Subsequently, during the Vietnam War, this route gained immense strategic importance as a supply line. Today, however, Lao Bao champions peace and economic development, proudly marking the starting point of the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC). This vital route facilitates trade, tourism, and diplomatic ties between Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.

Visitor and Crossing Information

Lao Bao welcomes thousands of travelers and vehicles daily. Tourists often use this checkpoint for international travel and common visa runs. We advise all visitors to secure the necessary visas beforehand; Lao Bao is an official entry point for Vietnamese E-visas.

When crossing, you must prepare your passport and relevant documents. Furthermore, you should expect a customs inspection, as this is a major commercial hub.

Practical Details for Your Trip

When planning your visit or border crossing, you should note the following crucial details:

  • Official Name: Lao Bảo International Border Gate

  • Address: JHFR+77R, TT. Lao Bảo, Hướng Hóa, Quảng Trị, Vietnam (This coordinate corresponds to the specific location of the checkpoint).

  • Operating Hours: The checkpoint operates daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Therefore, travelers should plan their crossing well within these hours to avoid delays.

  • Entry Fee: There is no specific entry fee for the gate itself, but travelers must pay standard visa and immigration processing fees if applicable.

  • Contact Information: Official contact numbers for the Immigration or Customs offices are usually not provided for public tourism inquiries. However, travelers can contact a regional tour operator or the general Quang Tri Tourism Department for assistance.

Nearby Attractions

While in the area, you can easily visit several historically significant sites. Travelers frequently combine a trip to the border gate with a visit to the Lao Bao Prison (Nhà tù Lao Bảo), a former French colonial prison nearby. Furthermore, exploring the famous Khe Sanh Combat Base offers a deeper look into the region’s intense past and its connection to National Highway 9.

If your doing a visa run from Vietnam to Laos things going pretty quickly and smoothly.
If u like to return to Vietnam the same day you will need an agent to do expedited visa for you around 75$ then u can do border crossing to Laos and come back to Vietnam with in few hours. In Vietnam side they take 50000 vnd on exist and arrival I think it's bakshish (not official) for most passports the lao visa is on arrival and u will need to pay 40$ USA it's better to come with new in perfect condition usa$ notes or you will be charged around 50$ in VND . Have a pan a passport pic.i did in an out in 1 hour .other then that nothing much to do or eat in the area .

it’s crazy ending in vietnam and the way to laos.
when i ask for departure stamp, the office just point to a cash of 50K.i said i don’t have money(only 400K Kip),he just return my passport back.i checked it thoroughly not stamped.i came to talk to another office in hall .anyway just put me aside after 40mins i got my stamp.
so i go to laos check point, the officer also overcharge 5 more dollars for arrival-on visa. at that time i didn’t realize it,i just thought the price may go up.
with my left 300K kip and my bicycle.i start to go to xeno.at this evening i only can put up my tent beside road.because after water and food and sim card i only have 40k on my hand.😅

An absolutely splendid experience. I took my scooter from Hue. Lovely views on the way.
Arrived at the vietnemese border gate, parked the bike, walked 200m to the exit point. 50k stamp fee (crazy that most bad reviews are about the 50k, get a job)
Walked another 200meters or so to the laos visa on arrival station, filled in 2 sheets of paper. 1.4m VND or 45 USD (USD is the cheaper option). Receive entry stamp. Walk 50 meters, receive exit stamp. Walk back to vietnam gate, get exit stamp (pay 50k vnd), walk back to my bike.

Avoid absolutely everyone who tries to ask you/offer you something.

🚍 Da Nang to Laos via Lao Bảo Border – The Cheap Way! 🇻🇳➡️🇱🇦

Just did the border crossing from Da Nang to Savannakhet, and here’s how to do it on a budget (way cheaper than booking with a travel agency):

🚌 Local Bus to the Border:
Departure: From Da Nang central bus station (bến xe trung tâm), buses start running at 6:00 AM, roughly every 30 minutes.

Price: 200–250k VND one way to Lao Bảo border.

Expect an older local bus, but it gets the job done!

🛂 Lao Visa at the Border:
Visa on Arrival: $40 USD or around 1.4 million VND

The border guard asked for a 50k "tip", but I kindly refused—and still got my stamp without any problem. Just smile and stay polite!

If you're just doing a visa run, you can go back to Vietnam immediately after getting your Lao entry stamp.

🚐 From Border to Savannakhet:
After crossing into Laos, there are minivans waiting at the gate.

We took one directly to Savannakhet for 100k VND.

The ride was air-conditioned and super comfy!

🤑 Compared to Agencies:
Booking with an agency in Da Nang can cost 1.3 million VND or more just to get to Savannakhet.

We did the whole trip for around 350k–400k VND total. Huge savings!

The bus left the Southern? bus terminal in Hue at 8:00
Got to the border around 11:00
Took about an hour for everyone including a bus to clear both customs, so that I had time for lunch. At the Vietnamese border, I was asked for 50,000VND which I denied. At the Laotian border, first 10,000kip which I paid and got the receipt then 20,000VND
which I also paid and not official I guess.
The bus arrived at the bus terminal in Savannakhet at 17:30.
It was a regular size bus with 1/3 passenger seats and 2/3 for import/export items. Quite a bit of stops for pickup/dropoff items, but very short stops.
6 passengers and I was the only foreigner with 4 crews. Overall, it was a pleasant journey.
