Phong Nha Cave (Động Phong Nha) stands as the quintessential icon of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Locals aptly call it the “First Wonder of the Cave” (Thiên Nam Đệ Nhất Động). This magnificent wet cave distinguishes itself as having the world’s longest underground river, which visitors explore by traditional dragon boat. The experience seamlessly blends a scenic river cruise with an awe-inspiring exploration of subterranean geological formations.

The Unforgettable River Journey

The primary attraction is the tranquil boat trip that begins at the central Phong Nha boat station in the town of Sơn Trạch.

  • Cruising the Sơn River (Sông Son): Your local boat operator steers a wooden boat for roughly 30 minutes along the beautiful Sơn River. This ride allows you to admire the surrounding karst mountains, quiet riverside villages, and lush greenery before you even reach the cave entrance.

  • Entering the Cave: The boat motor switches off as the boat drifts into the massive, high-arched entrance of Phong Nha Cave. Your senses immediately register the dramatic shift from sunlight to a cool, echoing darkness. The boat continues quietly, powered only by rowing, for the initial 1.5 kilometers open to tourists.

  • Exploring the Interior: Inside the cave, strategically placed lights highlight the spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations. Geologists have identified seven outstanding features, including the largest and widest cave mouth and the most beautiful underground lake. Tour guides often point out formations that resemble mythical creatures and figures, showcasing nature’s artistry.

Historical Significance

Phong Nha Cave holds not only natural but also historical importance. During the Vietnam War, the cave served as a hidden hospital, a weapons depot, and a shelter from bombings, a testament to its protective strength. This historical context adds a layer of cultural depth to the natural marvel you explore today.

Practical Visitor Information

Planning your trip requires understanding the unique ticket and transport structure of this site.

  • Location: The cave is easily accessible from Phong Nha town, where the boat station is located right on the Sơn River (Sông Son).

  • Tickets and Boat Hire: You must purchase two separate items: the individual entrance ticket and a shared boat ticket.

    • Cave Entrance Fee (Adult): Approximately 150,000 VND per person.

    • Boat Rental Fee: Approximately 550,000 VND per boat (maximum 12 passengers). Visitors share the boat fee, making it very economical for larger groups. If you travel solo, you should wait at the boat station to join a group to split the cost.

  • Operating Hours: The boat station opens around 7:30 AM, with the last boats typically leaving between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM. We advise arriving early, especially during peak season (March to August), to avoid crowds.

  • Helpful Tip: Cash is the preferred and often only method of payment for tickets and boat fees. Make sure you bring enough Vietnamese Dong (VND) with you, as ATMs can be scarce or unreliable in the immediate vicinity.

Really beautiful place to visit. Its very tourist-oriented so it gets quite tightly packed with the boats inside the cave, but even so, its pretty well organized. They also set it up so you can get off and walk around in the cave. You can either kayak or take a boat (private or shared). If you take a boat, tip your drivers well, they're incredible!

We did the two cave journey and enjoyed it a lot. Fun was had all round by us and our new friends from UK, Sweden and Italy. We did this system before paradise cave as to be not underwhelmed.

Once again, Phong Nha Cave did not disappoint. The journey starts with a scenic 20-minute boat ride along the river surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and thick jungle. Due to recent upstream rainfall in Laos, the water level was too high for boats to go deep into the cave, so we disembarked at the entrance and explored on foot.

The cave itself is enormous, with massive chambers and breathtaking limestone formations lit up beautifully to showcase their natural detail. The walkways are well-designed, making access inside easy and safe even for casual visitors. From delicate stalactites to towering rock curtains, the cave’s scale and beauty are awe-inspiring.

I’d recommend allowing 90–110 to fully walk-through without feeling rushed. If you’re in Phong Nha, this is an absolute must-visit—rain or shine, it’s a geological wonder you won’t forget.
