Minh Thanh Pagoda possesses a relatively young history, yet it features structures that reflect centuries of Asian tradition.
Founding and Restoration: Most Venerable Thích Giác Đạo established the pagoda in 1964. The pagoda underwent a significant restoration and expansion starting in 1997, which transformed it into the unique, majestic complex seen today.
Architectural Blend: The design blends traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture with distinct influences from China and Japan. The pagoda’s grand rooflines, vibrant colors, and intricate wood carvings clearly reflect this unique cultural synthesis. For instance, visitors note the Japanese style of the towering Cửu Phẩm Phù Đồ (Nine-Story Relic Tower), which stands 72 meters tall and is painted gold.
Mandala Design: The main hall’s structure is built in the form of a Mandala, a symbolic representation of the universe in Vajrayana Buddhism. Furthermore, the pagoda features massive, intricately carved wooden doors made from gỗ gõ (African mahogany), which depict the Four Heavenly Kings.
