Bửu Minh Pagoda (Chùa Bửu Minh) is one of the oldest and most beautiful spiritual landmarks in the Central Highlands, offering visitors a peaceful retreat and a fascinating study in religious architecture. The pagoda is uniquely positioned amidst the boundless green tea fields of Biển Hồ Chè, creating a highly picturesque and serene setting.

A Convergence of Architectural Styles and History

The pagoda boasts a rich history and a distinctive architectural style, making it a significant cultural gem.

  • Historical Roots: The pagoda was first established in 1936, giving it over 80 years of history in the region. It stands as one of the earliest Buddhist temples built on the Pleiku plateau, and it has evolved over decades under the care of various abbots.

  • Architectural Harmony: Bửu Minh Pagoda features a unique and harmonious blend of architectural traditions. Specifically, the design combines the classical elements of ancient Northern and Central Vietnamese pagodas with distinct influences from Japanese and Taiwanese temple styles. This fusion provides a fresh and striking appearance.

  • The Majestic Main Hall: The Main Hall (Chánh Điện) is noteworthy for its grand scale and towering roof, reaching a height of over 47 meters. This impressive height makes it one of the tallest pagoda peaks in Vietnam. The roof’s design gracefully mimics the steep, high eaves of the traditional Central Highlands nhà rông communal house, paying homage to the local ethnic culture.

  • Intricate Features: Visitors will observe exquisite details throughout the complex. The Tam Quan Gate, for example, is built in the style of the Hiển Lâm Các of the Huế Imperial City, featuring five roofs and three entrances.

The Serene Setting and Visitor Experience

The location of Bửu Minh Pagoda amplifies its spiritual and aesthetic appeal.

  • The Tea Hill Backdrop: The pagoda sits right in the middle of the famous Biển Hồ Chè (Tea Lake) region. This expansive green backdrop ensures a clean, fresh, and exceptionally tranquil atmosphere for meditation and contemplation. You can enjoy views of the rolling tea hills from the pagoda grounds.

  • Proximity to Key Sites: The temple is easily accessible from the famous Hai Hàng Thông (Hundred-Year-Old Pine Avenue), often visited as a combined attraction. Furthermore, it sits close to the majestic Biển Hồ T’Nưng, allowing for a convenient spiritual and scenic itinerary.

  • A Place of Worship and Peace: Bửu Minh functions as an active center of worship. Visitors are encouraged to experience the temple’s serene atmosphere, participate in traditional festivals (if timing permits), and take in the sheer beauty of the location.

Visitor Information

  • Location: The pagoda is located in Nghĩa Hưng Commune, Chư Păh District, approximately 14-15 kilometers north of Pleiku City center.

  • Getting There: The journey takes about 20-30 minutes by motorbike or taxi from the city. The road often takes you past the beautiful pine rows leading into the tea plantation area.

  • Admission: Visiting Bửu Minh Pagoda is generally free, as it is a place of worship. Visitors should be mindful of making a voluntary donation for the temple’s maintenance.

  • Etiquette: Visitors must dress modestly and respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, and maintaining quiet demeanor inside the worship areas. Please show respect for the religious statues and artifacts.

We stopped by when strolling around the famous 100 years old pine trees road. It was closed when we came early in the morning, but it wasn’t locked so we still could get it. Good to pay a visit and for praying and walk around.

One of the oldest temple in the area. While there is some work going on, there's a sense is serenity there I appreciate. Most worship places are quite similar in its set up, so it's about the vibe that makes a difference. And on the way out, a monk invited us for tea, quite a pleasant surprise.
