Cù Lao Xanh, literally translated as “Green Islet” (also known as Vân Phi Island), represents the ultimate island escape in Bình Định Province. The island earns its name from the dense, verdant forest that covers its hillsides, providing a stunning contrast against the pristine white sand and the clear, emerald-blue sea. It offers a perfect blend of untouched natural beauty and authentic local culture.

Key Attractions and Activities

Visitors discover a variety of attractions that appeal to both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

  • Plogam Bir Lighthouse: The island’s main historical landmark is the Plogam Bir Lighthouse, a towering structure built by the French in 1890. Climbing the lighthouse rewards travelers with an incredible panoramic view of the entire island, the surrounding ocean, and the picturesque fishing village below.

  • Snorkeling and Swimming: The waters around Cù Lao Xanh are famous for their exceptional clarity and rich marine biodiversity. Travelers should head to beaches like Bãi Nhỏ (Small Beach) or Bãi Gala (Gala Beach), where they can easily rent gear for snorkeling or scuba diving to admire the vibrant coral reefs.

  • Thảo Nguyên Rocky Beach: This unique coastal area features large, curiously shaped rocks of various sizes, creating a fantastic natural landscape for photography and exploration.

  • Giếng Tiên (Fairy Well): Legend says that fairies once bathed in this freshwater stream, making it a refreshing and beautiful spot to visit.

Travel Logistics and Access

Accessing Cù Lao Xanh requires a boat trip from Quy Nhơn, ensuring a secluded and authentic island experience.

  • Getting There: Travelers depart from Hàm Tử Wharf (Cảng Hàm Tử) in Quy Nhơn City. They can choose between a slow, public wooden boat (Tàu Gỗ) which takes about two hours, or a much faster speed canoe (Cano Cao Tốc) which cuts the travel time to just 25 to 30 minutes.

    • Speed Canoe Fee: Typically costs around 200,000 VNĐ one-way (approx. $8-9 USD).

    • Wooden Boat Fee: Is much cheaper, around 30,000 VNĐ one-way (approx. $1.2 USD).

  • Accommodation: Most travelers opt for a day trip, but many local residents offer affordable homestays, providing a chance to experience local island life and enjoy overnight activities like night squid fishing or beach camping.

  • Local Culture: The island’s residents are primarily fishermen, renowned for their simplicity and hospitality. Visitors enjoy a rustic atmosphere and fresh, high-quality seafood at the local eateries.

Important Notes for Visitors

  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit is from January to September, when the sea is calm and the weather is sunny.

  • Island Security: Cù Lao Xanh operates under the management of the Vietnamese Border Guards. Visitors must carry their personal identification documents (ID/Passport) as they may need to present them upon arrival.
