Hòn Lao Island, affectionately called Monkey Island, promises an exciting and adventurous day trip from Nha Trang. It provides a captivating kingdom where thousands of wild macaque monkeys roam freely. This destination is perfect for nature lovers and families seeking an interactive wildlife experience.

History and the Monkey Population

The island’s history traces back to the 1970s. Specifically, in 1975, Soviet experts brought macaque monkeys to Hòn Lao to establish a site for breeding and scientific research. These monkeys subsequently flourished on the island. Today, the population has grown significantly, making the island a safe haven for the macaques. Park staff actively manage the monkey population and ensure their well-being, even offering scheduled feeding times for visitors to observe.

Activities and Entertainment

Hòn Lao offers a mix of natural beauty and organized entertainment, guaranteeing a full day of fun.

  • Monkey Interaction: The primary attraction is the free-roaming monkeys. They greet visitors shortly after arrival. Guests should note that while the monkeys are accustomed to humans, they remain wild animals. Therefore, keeping food secured and avoiding sudden movements is crucial.

  • Unique Shows: The island hosts several unique animal performances daily. The most popular include the “Monkey Swimming Race,” where trained macaques compete, and entertaining dog and monkey circus shows. These events provide unique photo opportunities and entertainment.

  • Recreational Sports: For those seeking more adventure, Hòn Lao features various paid activities. Visitors can enjoy Go-Kart racing, paintball, and other fun sports in dedicated areas, thus adding a thrilling element to the island visit.

  • Nha Phu Lagoon Views: A colorful bridge spans the mountain on the island, offering visitors a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding Nha Phu Lagoon and the mainland.

Had a lot of fun here walking around feeding the monkeys. The circus show was unlike anything I’ve seen before although it did make me feel sorry for the animals.

They literally force the monkeys to envolve by making them have races on little motorbikes - this and the circus show are probably not the best animal husbandry but besides that they can run around the whole island freely and can get feeded by visitors mostly by bananas - buy the bananas BEFORE getting on the island if you want to save money as they have crazy prices on the island - nice beaches around the island with swings and stuff to enjoy clear water - entry is 180k which u pay by purchasing a ferry ticket - ferry times are as everything in vietnam a bit random on times

The time to reach the island is, on average, 12 minutes. You can watch the monkey show at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. The monkeys are cute, some of them might try to grab your clothes if they see a package with food. Bananas and nuts to feed them cost ₫35,000.

It’s not a big island—perhaps it takes about 40 minutes to walk around. But there are many places to take great pictures. I personally like the colorful houses on one side of the island.

Nice experience. A great place to visit. The monkeys are friendly, so no danger. Tickets can be purchased online or on-site, with no price difference. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to reach the island by a standard boat.
