The Đó Theater (Nhà hát Đó) emerges as a new and striking cultural landmark in Nha Trang, promising an unforgettable evening of art and entertainment. Its world-class facilities and unique daily performance elevate the city’s tourism offerings, attracting both local and international visitors.

Unique Architecture and Cultural Inspiration

The design of the Đó Theater immediately draws attention. Architects creatively based the structure on the shape of a “Đó”—a traditional Vietnamese fishing basket or trap. This distinctive indigenous architecture, combined with modern, high-tech construction, creates a visually stunning effect, making the theater a recognized record holder for having the “largest indigenous-inspired architecture.” The exterior features decorative motifs resembling coral branches and pearls, seamlessly blending the building with its coastal setting on Nha Trang Bay. The entire complex spans 2,500 $\text{m}^2$ and features state-of-the-art stage mechanics, sound, and lighting systems imported from Europe.

The "Life Puppets" Show (Rối Mơ)

The theater’s main attraction is the daily art performance titled “Life Puppets” (Rối Mơ – or “Dream Puppet”). This show stands out for its innovative fusion of traditional Vietnamese puppetry with contemporary art forms.

  • Fusion of Arts: The performance masterfully blends traditional water puppetry, string puppetry, shadow puppetry, and animated puppetry with modern dance and ethnic instrumental music. This combination creates a captivating and multi-sensory spectacle.

  • Cultural Significance: “Life Puppets” tells a multi-chapter story that aims to recreate and honor the rich traditional cultural values of Vietnam, presenting them in an artistic language accessible to a global audience.

  • Performance Space: The theater’s advanced facilities allow for a unique, co-present cultural art performance, where the action unfolds across multiple dimensions.

Didn’t go in, was only outside. Something was extremely stinky in this area. Sewage?

This area is somewhat dead, people only go to take pictures, securities are overly sensitive. 🤷‍♀️ not sure why there are these types of development with nothing around yet extremely stinky sewage smell.

I just watched the live puppet show at Đó Theater in Nha Trang, and it was amazing! The performance was full of creativity, culture, and emotion — unlike anything I’ve seen before. The puppeteers were incredibly talented, and the atmosphere of the small theater made it feel very personal and authentic. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Nha Trang who wants to experience something unique and meaningful.

My husband and I chose the 6 PM show and sat in the very near first row, where every detail was so vivid and close. That decision turned out to be perfect—because this performance was not only entertaining, but also profoundly moving.
From the seamless flow of each act to the passion the artists poured into their craft, everything was filled with soul. They didn’t just perform with technique—they performed with their lives, their spirits, their boundless love for the art of water puppetry.
One of the most powerful moments was the image of 12 pieces forming a circle of the 12 zodiac animals, carrying a deep message: no matter where we come from, when we come together and share, we create a circle of love and peace that spreads everywhere.
What amazed me further was the creativity—using bamboo and wood not just as props but as musical instruments, blending live drumming and melodies into the storytelling. The familiar figure of chú Tễu brought humor, while the scene of the buffalo bathing in the water almost made me cry. Through nothing but strings, music, and light, the artists gave that buffalo a soul—so alive, so tender, I couldn’t take my eyes off.
This is not just a show to watch, but an experience to feel. Rich in artistry, meaningful for both children and adults, and deeply touching. A performance worth seeing, worth treasuring. My heartfelt thanks to all the artists for giving us such an unforgettable evening.

Đó theater truly delivers a visually stunning experience, with impressive music, lighting, and performances that completely captivate the audience. It’s an immersive cultural journey that leaves a strong impression.

However, I think it would be even better if the theater provided a short leaflet or brochure summarizing the storyline. This would help the audience – especially tourists – fully grasp the meaning behind each performance, allowing them not only to enjoy the show visually but also to understand its deeper cultural value.

The show deserves much higher recognition and awareness among the locals and tourists alike. The sheer creativity and efforts that were put in little details to the big stage is unique and so amazing. I never saw a performance that combines so smoothly and beautifully traditional elements like music, water puppet, the village scene with modern elements like the use of stage design, lighting, live camera, puppet movement and contemporary dance. And at the heart of the show are the great performers, puppet masters and the music crew. Truly one of a kind show that should be missed when you're in Nha Trang.
