Lam Vien Square: Da Lat's Modern Center and Iconic Photo Spot

Lam Vien Square (Quảng Trường Lâm Viên) serves as the massive, modern public heart of Da Lat city. Strategically located facing the serene Xuan Huong Lake, the square covers an expansive area of over 72,000 square meters. This central location ensures visitors find it easily accessible and an essential stop on any Da Lat itinerary. The square actively hosts large public events, festivals, and concerts, making it a vibrant center for local life and culture.

Architecture and Iconic Landmarks

Lam Vien Square distinguishes itself through its two colossal, unique glass structures that have become instant icons of the city.

  • The Giant Wild Sunflower: This 20-meter-high structure, designed with vibrant yellow and green stained glass, immediately captures attention. Its tilted design successfully evokes a towering wild sunflower in full bloom, symbolizing the city’s identity as the “City of Flowers.” The large structure often houses a venue used for events, art exhibitions, or cafes.

  • The Artichoke Flower Bud: Standing at approximately 15 meters tall, the second main structure beautifully represents an artichoke bud, a famous local crop in the Da Lat area. Made of spiraling glass panels, this green and purple construction contains a modern café inside. Tourists often queue here to take memorable photos, using the distinctive shapes as a stunning backdrop.

  • Modern Design: Completed in 2016, the square features smooth, contemporary landscaping, with broad open spaces, surrounding flowerbeds, and clean sightlines toward Xuan Huong Lake. Consequently, the design makes it an ideal place for relaxation and social gathering.

Activities and Visitor Experience

The square is a dynamic space that changes character from dawn until late evening, offering several enjoyable activities.

  • Leisure and Relaxation: Due to Da Lat’s cool climate, many people flock to the square for an evening stroll. Local residents and tourists gather here to socialize, exercise, or simply sit and enjoy the surrounding atmosphere and the view of the lake.

  • Photography: Aside from the giant structures, the square provides numerous excellent photo opportunities, particularly when the glass buildings illuminate with bright lights at night.

  • Local Food and Shopping: Small vendors often set up around the square, especially in the evenings, selling popular Vietnamese street food and local snacks. Therefore, visitors enjoy a perfect opportunity to sample authentic local cuisine and immerse themselves in the local nighttime market scene.

Practical Visitor Information

Since Lam Vien Square is a public space, access is very straightforward and open year-round.

  • Address: Đ. Trần Quốc Toản, Phường 1, Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam (Located directly across from Xuan Huong Lake).

  • Entrance Fee: Accessing the square and admiring the exterior architecture is completely free of charge.

  • Opening Hours: The square is a large public area and is generally open 24 hours a day. However, cafes, shops, and activity vendors within the complex adhere to their own operating hours, typically closing late in the evening.

  • Contact Information: As a public space, there is no single contact phone number for the square itself. For specific event or rental inquiries related to the venues inside the structures, you must check local directories or tourist information centers.

Right across from Xuan Huong Lake, Lam Vien Square is a massive, open urban space that truly comes alive on weekends. The stepped walkways from the lakeside road lead up to the heart of the square, where two eye-catching structures steal the show: the green glass artichoke-shaped dome, which houses a Highlands Coffee shop, and the bright yellow flower bud-shaped dome, inspired by the wild sunflower (da quy) — one of Da Lat’s floral icons.

The design is modern and symbolic, giving this square a unique architectural identity. Along the steps and throughout the plaza are plenty of places to sit and relax, making it perfect for people-watching or taking in the scenery.

On weekends, the square becomes a vibrant gathering spot for locals. Families fly kites, students hang out, and street vendors set up stalls selling snacks and toys. Beneath the square is an entrance to a shopping center with a cinema, GO! Supermarket, cafés, and various specialty shops — ideal for grabbing a bite or cooling off inside.

With the lake views, creative landscaping, and cultural vibe, Lam Vien Square is a great place to unwind, explore, and snap some memorable photos.

Really great place for the sunrise and sunset time with the panoramic view with the lake and the mountains and Pagoda in the background, which is definitely unique to witness. In the surrounding area you can enjoy different activities such as cinema, gym exercise, various restaurants and also an opera house which seems to be famous. There were also many for what it seemed to me graduation student, maybe? Anyway, it's truly a place to go when the sun goes down around 5pm because the colors of the sky are indescribable and yet beautiful and majestic. Your girlfriend would be happy if that's what they would say. The locals I mean
