An Hòa Sheep Hill (Đồi Cừu An Hòa) offers a tranquil, unique experience in Ninh Thuận, far removed from the usual coastal attractions. This sprawling landscape is home to one of the largest free-grazing sheep populations in Vietnam. The area presents a captivating sight of vast grasslands and herds of peaceful sheep, evoking a sense of pastoral, almost nomadic, life.

A Unique Landscape and Photography Hotspot

The natural scenery and the presence of the herds make An Hòa an irresistible destination for nature lovers and photographers.

  • Picture-Perfect Scenery: The landscape combines dry, golden grasslands, low-lying hills, and the tranquil Thanh Sơn Lake. The scattered sheep create a visually stunning, almost European, countryside aesthetic, despite being located in Vietnam’s driest region.

  • Best Time to Visit: Timing is critical for the best experience and photos. Visit in the early morning (6:30 AM – 7:30 AM) or late afternoon (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM). During these times, the light is soft, and the shepherds move the sheep out to or back from grazing, providing the most dynamic photo opportunities. Avoid the midday sun, as it can be intensely hot.

  • Seasonal Beauty: The period from January to August is generally considered the best time to visit. This is when the local grasslands are at their greenest following the limited rainy season, offering a vibrant backdrop.

Culture and Visitor Activities

Visiting An Hòa offers a glimpse into the local Cham and Raglai ethnic culture, where sheep farming is a deeply established tradition.

  • Interacting with Sheep: Visitors enjoy taking photos with the sheep. The herds are usually gentle. You should ask the local shepherds (often of Cham descent) for permission and assistance, as they can help gather the flock for better pictures. A small gratuity for their help is highly appreciated.

  • Understanding Local Life: Sheep farming is a crucial part of the local economy and culture in arid Ninh Thuận. These animals thrive in the dry climate. Farmers primarily raise them for meat, which is a local specialty. You experience the simplicity of local life by observing the shepherds and their dogs at work.

  • Experiential Tourism: Some areas offer guided tours or allow guests to temporarily immerse themselves in the herding process for a unique cultural experience.

Essential Visitor Information

Since An Hòa is primarily a farming area, visitors must manage expectations regarding tourist infrastructure.

Quite far from the center, deserted. Weekend but no one goes. The sheep's wool is quite dirty, in general just go to support the people working there, nothing special. Holding some water spinach to feed the sheep but they run away in a cloud of dust.
