Bái Đính Pagoda: A Spiritual Center of Monumental Proportions

Bái Đính Pagoda is not merely a temple; it is an enormous spiritual and cultural complex that holds multiple Vietnamese and Asian records for its immense scale and monumental artifacts. This site attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually, offering both ancient spiritual history and modern, magnificent Buddhist architecture.

Address: Xóm 6, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình, Vietnam. The complex is strategically located near the ancient capital of Hoa Lư, making it a central point in Ninh Bình’s historical and scenic landscape.

I. Scale and Records: The New Pagoda Complex

The modern Bái Đính Pagoda (Bái Đính Tân Tự) covers a massive area and showcases monumental achievements in Buddhist architecture. Visitors are often amazed by the sheer size of the complex.

  • Colossal Statues: The site proudly holds records for having the largest gilded bronze Buddha in Asia, and the largest bronze Maitreya Buddha statue in Southeast Asia. Specifically, the Tam Thế Hall houses three identical statues representing the past, present, and future, underscoring the vast scope of Vietnamese Buddhism.

  • Arhat Corridor: You can walk along the longest Arhat (La Hán) corridor in Asia, which stretches nearly 3 kilometers and displays 500 unique statues of Buddhist disciples, each carved with a distinct expression.

  • Bao Thap Tower: The 100-meter-tall Stupa (Bảo Tháp) offers a commanding view of the entire complex and surrounding landscape. It houses sacred relics of the Buddha from India and Myanmar.

  • Giant Bell: The Bell Tower houses a colossal 36-ton bronze bell, which holds the record as the largest in Vietnam.

II. History and Culture: The Ancient Pagoda

The complex also incorporates the original Bái Đính Cổ Tự (Ancient Bái Đính Pagoda), which carries a significant history.

  • Ancient Worship: This older pagoda sits about 800 meters from the new complex and requires a climb of over 300 stone steps. It nestles within several small caves on the mountainside. Here, devotees venerate both Buddhist deities and local mountain spirits.

  • Ngọc Well (Giếng Ngọc): The complex features an ancient, large well known as the Pearl Well, which locals believe brings luck and prosperity. The well never runs dry, testifying to its historical use by monks for purification.

  • Dress Code: As a deeply revered spiritual site, visitors must respect the religious dress code. You should cover your shoulders and knees; therefore, wear modest clothing.

III. Essential Visitor Information

Due to the vast size of the area, prepare for a long visit and considerable walking.

  • Entrance Fee: Entrance to the pagoda grounds is generally free of charge.

  • Electric Car Service: The site is immense, so most visitors opt for the electric car service from the parking area to the main temple complex. A round-trip ticket costs approximately 80,000 VND to 100,000 VND per person.

  • Bao Thap Tower Fee: Accessing the Stupa often requires a separate ticket, typically around 50,000 VND to 60,000 VND.

  • Operating Hours: Bái Đính Pagoda is open daily, often from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Some areas may remain open later for nighttime viewing.

  • Best Time to Visit: The most crowded, yet culturally rich, time to visit is during the annual Bái Đính Pagoda Festival in spring (typically after Lunar New Year in the first few lunar months). For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the off-peak seasons.

I visited with my family around 6 pm. It was getting dark when we started. On the upside, the temple was almost empty, and we enjoyed having it mostly to ourselves. The temple is very large and deserves a full-day visit to make sure you see everything. Some of the gardens and paths are not lit after dark. There are many sheltered walkways to provide cover from the rain and sunshine. It was very peaceful and quiet. I wish there was a walking path all the way to the temple instead of having to take the electric car.

Very nice place in a perfect setting and you can see the largest Arhat corridor in Asia , nearly 3 kms long with sitting Arhats (enlightened disciples of Buddha) green stone statues in different poses and each differe6from the other - totally 500 statues - 250 each in a corridor of 1.7 kms and each weighing 4 tonnes. Plus the largest bronze bell tower 8n Vietnam. A must visit place to understand the Buddhist faith.

Historically significant as largest Buddhist temple in Vietnam built over 1500 years ago. Destroyed in a war and rebuilt. Can be appealing for aspiring Buddhists and avid historians. Not a place for fun but you can find some interesting souvenirs and mini cafes. Pay to use buggies if you are too lazy to walk the village-size temple grounds. Lots of open grounds. Will be more comfortable to visit during cooler months.

Bái Đính Pagoda is an incredible place to visit and one of the highlights of Ninh Binh. The complex is huge with hundreds of Buddha statues lined along the walkways and several impressive temples to explore. The main pagoda is beautiful and the giant bronze Buddha is breathtaking to see in person. I went as part of a tour, but honestly it is not worth it. You can easily go on your own since the entrance fee is relatively cheap. There are many steps to climb but the views and the peaceful atmosphere make it worthwhile. It is a very spiritual and impressive site and definitely worth adding to your trip in Ninh Binh.

The place was huge! We didn't realise how big and we went with the ticket 2, at 150k. We should have had the electric shuttle because it was extremely warm and humid and the place is so so so big. We completely forgot we had access to the pagoda and we didn't go in but in case we were exhausted and fulfilled with all the different temples and beauty of the place.
