The spectacular T’Nưng Lake (Hồ T’Nưng), locally and affectionately known as Biển Hồ (Sea Lake), stands as the most beautiful natural landmark in Gia Lai Province. This immense freshwater lake, located approximately 7 kilometers northwest of Pleiku City, captivates visitors with its serene beauty and vast expanse. Consequently, locals often refer to it as the “Eyes of Pleiku.”

Geological Origins and Natural Features

T’Nưng Lake is a natural wonder born from the geological turbulence of the Central Highlands.

  • Volcanic Crater: The lake occupies the mouth of an ancient, inactive volcano. This gives the lake its impressive depth, which averages around 19 meters in some areas. The surrounding rim, which forms the lake’s banks, is clearly visible from a distance, adding to its dramatic landscape.

  • A “Sea on the Mountain”: The name Biển Hồ translates to “Sea Lake,” reflecting its size; when strong winds blow, waves crash along the shore, creating a vast, ocean-like feel. Furthermore, the indigenous Jrai people call it T’Nưng, which also means “sea on the mountain,” demonstrating the local reverence for its size.

  • Ecosystem and Landscape: Lush green pine forests and rolling hills surround the deep turquoise water, creating a picturesque setting. The area provides a vital habitat for various bird species, including kingfishers, making it an excellent spot for bird-watching and nature photography.

History, Culture, and Local Significance

Biển Hồ holds deep cultural and historical significance for the people of Gia Lai, particularly the local ethnic minorities.

  • Local Legends: Many local legends explain the lake’s origin. One popular tale recounts the lake forming from the tears of a grieving Jrai tribe after a catastrophic volcanic eruption destroyed their village. This deeply rooted folklore imbues the lake with a spiritual importance.

  • Historical Recognition: Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture and Information officially recognized Biển Hồ as a National Landscape Monument in 1988, acknowledging its primitive charm and natural value.

  • Cultural Connection: Vietnamese musician Nguyễn Cường immortalized the lake in his famous song “The Eyes of Pleiku,” which cemented its identity as a romantic symbol of the Central Highlands.

Visitor Information and Activities

T’Nưng Lake offers a tranquil retreat and several picturesque activities for travelers.

  • Scenic Road and Observation Point: Visitors access the main viewing area by following a beautifully paved road flanked by towering ancient pine trees. A serene pathway leads to a wide, elevated terrace where guests enjoy panoramic views of the entire lake.

  • Activities: Travelers enjoy cycling or walking around the lake’s perimeter, taking in the fresh highland air. Moreover, you can hire a local độc mộc (dugout canoe) to glide silently across the water, allowing for a closer look at the hidden coves and tranquil environment.

  • Admission and Access: The lake is open year-round. Visitors must purchase a small entrance ticket, typically around 10,000 VND for adults and 5,000 VND for children over 1.2 meters. The site also provides electric carts from the entrance gate to the main viewing area for a small fee.

  • Best Time to Visit: Plan your visit early in the morning to witness the mist rising magically off the water, or late in the afternoon to capture the spectacular Central Highlands sunset. The dry season (November to April) offers the most consistently clear and pleasant weather.

Biển Hồ, also known as T’Nưng Lake, is one of the most iconic natural attractions in Pleiku, Gia Lai. Surrounded by pine forests and located on an extinct volcanic crater, the lake offers stunning views, cool breezes, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset, when the light reflects off the water in mesmerizing colors.

The walk down the pine-covered road to the lake is a highlight. There’s also a viewpoint with railings where visitors can take great photos of the lake and surrounding hills. The place is clean and generally well-maintained, offering a refreshing escape from the city.

However, charging an entrance fee of 10,000 VND per person feels unnecessary. While the fee is small, there’s no added service or facility provided in return—no guided tours, maps, or improvements in infrastructure. For a natural public site, it would be better if the fee were either used transparently for conservation or waived entirely to encourage more visitors.

Overall, Biển Hồ is worth a visit for its natural beauty and serene vibes. But the ticket policy could be rethought to better reflect the value offered to tourists.

The lake area is perfect for a short 2 or 3 hours walk in the pine woods. Dont underestimate the easy walk as you will be healed by the best therapies offered by nature sun light, cool breeze, bird sound, water reflection, etc. The best of all is very likely you would have the whole trail for your self and do not meet any human soul during the walk. A map is not neccessary as the trail is easy to spot and follow. If you have more time, check those new cafe places along the road on the hill besides the lake. Some coffee places are designed with distinct style, cool and cozy while blending well into the landscape.

Big lake with a lovely view. Good for chilling on a day off. They also have some electric buggy cars to help transport in the lake area.

Nice checkpoint but not so attractive , you can choose to walk in instead of buying transport ticket to get inside , and stay half way to take some nice photo ! You need time to enjoy the moment !
