Can Tho Market: A Heritage Gem by the Hậu River

The Can Tho Market (Chợ Cần Thơ), often referred to as the Can Tho Old Market, stands as a remarkable architectural and historical landmark in the heart of Cần Thơ. Its grand structure is one of the most photographed buildings in the Mekong Delta, providing a captivating blend of French colonial elegance and Vietnamese commercial culture.

Address: 136 Đ. Hai Bà Trưng, Tân An, Ninh Kiều, Cần Thơ, Vietnam.

I. History and Architectural Significance

The market was built between 1912 and 1915 by the French contractor Broossard et Mopin, simultaneously with Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic Ben Thanh Market. This parallel history establishes the market’s significance as a major trading hub for the “Six Provinces” (Lục Tỉnh) of Southern Vietnam during the colonial era.

  • Colonial Design: The market features a striking, distinctive design that utilizes a solid wooden frame and arched doorways. Its impressive façade showcases ornate details typical of early 20th-century French architecture. Authorities invested in a large-scale renovation, completed in 2005, to preserve this historical status.

  • Riverside Location: The market strategically faces the Hậu River, near the Ninh Kiều Wharf, which historically allowed goods to be easily transported from the river directly to the market stalls. This proximity creates a scenic spot, especially at night when the building illuminates.

II. Visitor Experience and What to Expect

Today, the market functions primarily as a retail center for tourists, while the adjacent streets host the lively night market. A visit here provides an excellent combination of history, shopping, and dining.

  • Shopping Focus: Merchants primarily sell souvenirs, local handicrafts, clothing, accessories, and packaged local specialties. We encourage visitors to browse the unique artisan products that reflect the culture of the Mekong Delta region.

  • Dining: The building houses high-quality restaurants, such as the renowned Sao Hôm Restaurant, which offers Asian and Vietnamese cuisines in an atmospheric, historical setting. You can enjoy a meal here while admiring the architectural beauty.

  • Proximity to Nightlife: The market is adjacent to the Ninh Kieu Night Market (Chợ đêm Ninh Kiều), which typically starts in the late afternoon. Therefore, you can easily combine a daytime or early evening visit to the historic market with a subsequent exploration of the bustling food and street stalls next door.

III. Essential Visitor Information

Planning your visit ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience at this cultural landmark.

  • Operating Hours: The market generally opens daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, but confirm with local sources, as restaurant hours may differ.

  • Entrance Fee: The site does not charge an admission fee to enter the building.

  • Getting There: The market is situated centrally in Ninh Kiều District, easily accessible on foot from most central Cần Thơ hotels. You can hire a taxi or motorbike to reach the location quickly.

  • Contact: No public telephone number is available for the market complex; refer to contact information for the specific restaurants or the Cần Thơ Tourism Development Center if you require further details.

The market is indoors and sheltered nicely from the heat and rain. It is fairly small but quiet and they sell lots of clothing, souvenirs and sundry goods. The view is very nice looking out at the river. It can get stuffy and hot though. Prices were slightly high for postcards but other souvenirs were reasonably priced. Spent about thirty minutes there looking for gifts for my friends- postcards, magnets and some t-shirts.

A beautifully unique destination worth visiting

The building itself is stunning, with a distinctive colonial river vibe that truly transports you to another era. It’s not just visually impressive—the atmosphere feels rich with history and charm.

Inside, you’ll find a variety of new local brands offering creative and original products, which is refreshing compared to the usual market fare. It’s a great way to discover something different and support local talent.

The architecture alone makes it worth the visit, but the thoughtful mix of heritage and modern creativity makes the experience even more special.

The clothes market to me is not interesting but the food market is great. Lots of activity and some great looking food. Great place to buy fruit as there aren't many places in Can Tho that have anywhere near the choice so stock up.
