Con Son Pagoda (Chua Con Son), also known by its ancient name Tu Phuc Tu, is a central feature of the Con Son – Kiep Bac Complex, one of Vietnam’s most significant historical and spiritual sites. Nestled on Con Son Mountain amid lush pine forests and natural springs, the pagoda is renowned for its centuries-old history, its role in Vietnamese Buddhism, and its connection to national heroes.
History and Spiritual Significance
Zen Center: The pagoda was originally built during the Ly Dynasty (11th-12th centuries) and later became one of the three primary centers of the Truc Lam Zen Buddhist sect during the Tran Dynasty (13th-14th centuries).
Three Founders of Truc Lam: Con Son is particularly sacred as the place where the Third Patriarch, Huyen Quang, lived, taught, and was buried. The pagoda once housed the magnificent Nine-Story Lotus Tower (Cuu Pham Lien Hoa).
National Heroes: The area is deeply associated with national hero Nguyen Trai (1380–1442), a revered poet and strategist, whose family lived and worked in the area. His father’s tomb and the Thanh Hu Temple (rebuilt on the site of his former residence) are nearby.
National Relic: The entire Con Son – Kiep Bac complex has been recognized as a Special National Relic (Di tich Quoc gia Dac biet).

Architecture and Natural Beauty
Architecture: The pagoda features traditional Vietnamese temple architecture, including a grand Triple Gate (Tam Quan) and a majestic Upper Sanctuary (Thuong Dien) where the Buddha statues reside. Many statues date back to the Le Dynasty.
Scenery: The temple is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Key natural highlights include:
Ban Co Tien (Fairy’s Chessboard): Located at the mountain peak, reached by climbing a 600-step stone path, offering panoramic views.
Gieng Ngoc (Jade Well): A spring believed to possess sacred water.
Pine Forest: The pagoda is nestled in a thick, ancient pine forest, creating a profoundly serene atmosphere.
Ancient Stele: The Thanh Hu Cave Stele, a stone tablet inscribed with historical text, is preserved here and has been recognized as a National Treasure.
