Da Nang Cathedral (Pink Church) – A Colonial Gem in the City Center

The Da Nang Cathedral (Nha Tho Chinh Toa Da Nang), affectionately known as the Pink Church or the Rooster Church (Nha Tho Con Ga), stands as a vibrant landmark in the heart of Da Nang City. The distinctive pastel pink facade and classic Gothic design make it a highly popular and instantly recognizable attraction for both faith observers and photographers alike. This prominent structure remains one of the few surviving examples of French colonial architecture in the city.

I. History and Architecture

The cathedral’s unique look and history attract countless visitors every year.

  • Colonial Heritage: Father Louis Vallet designed and constructed the church during the French colonial period, with its inauguration taking place in 1924. Its presence symbolizes the history of the Catholic community in Central Vietnam.

  • Gothic Style: The building features classic Gothic Revival architecture, characterized by high arches, pointed windows, and the towering spire.

  • The Rooster Vane: Locals gave the cathedral its nickname, “Rooster Church,” because of the metallic rooster-shaped weather vane perched atop the bell tower. This vane, traditionally a symbol of St. Peter’s repentance, points the wind and also gives the building its memorable local name.

II. Essential Visitor Information and Etiquette

Since the cathedral is an active place of worship, visitors should plan their trip to respect the local community.

  • Address: 156 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau District, Da Nang City, Vietnam.

  • Entrance Fee: The cathedral is free to visit. Be cautious of anyone attempting to sell tickets near the gates, as the entrance is always complimentary.

  • Visiting Hours: The church has specific hours for visitors outside of mass: Mondays to Saturdays typically from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The interior is often closed to tourists outside these times and during services.

  • Mass Schedule (Reference – Subject to Change): The cathedral hosts services daily. Visitors should note that an English Mass is typically held on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM. The main services usually occur at 5:00 AM and 5:30 PM on weekdays and multiple times on Sundays. Always check the current schedule directly at the church or on a local information portal before planning your visit.

III. Tips for a Respectful and Enjoyable Visit

  • Dress Code: Please wear polite and modest clothing. This means covering your shoulders and knees to show respect for the sacred site.

  • Mass Etiquette: Maintain quiet inside the church, especially during mass. Do not take photographs or video during the services, as this disrupts the worshipers.

  • Location: The central location places the cathedral near other key attractions, including the Han Market and the Dragon Bridge. Consequently, you can easily combine your cathedral visit with a city walking tour. The morning light often illuminates the pink facade best for photographs.

09/06/25. The Rooster Church of Da Nang.

This candy-pink Da Nang Cathedral was our first stop in our tour of Da Nang's Hai Chau district.

Known locally by the name ‘Rooster’ (Con Ga) Church. The name comes from the imposing bell tower that’s topped with a rooster weathercock. Our guide explained that the rooster on the roof of the church is not in fact the symbol of France, but is a symbol associated with St Peter.

It is the only church constructed when Vietnam was still under the control of French colonialists. The cathedral is also one of the few examples of French architecture still remaining in Da Nang. A must visit!

Very nice cathedral in Da Nang and just in front of our hotel. Looks better at night due to very good lighting effect. They also have clean toilets and you have to pay 3K VD to use them. They also have a shop selling religious items and bought a nice holy family figurine with nice jade ornaments. Attended the 10am English Mass last Sunday.

We went there on a Sunday at 10 in the morning to attend the English Sunday Mass. One can feel the history of Vietnam as we sat on the aisle, beautiful and colorful stained window glasses, crystal chandeliers and the multicultural attendees in the celebration.

Blessed that Danang Cathedral is just a short walk from my hotel. On Sundays, there are 6 masses! I participated in the 3PM Vietnamese mass. Due to the touristy nature of the area, the wardens must try to differentiate between the mass-goers and tourists during peak hours. The cathedral is pink in colour and is the lone example of church architecture during the French colonial period. Can make out some of the words used during the mass because there's some similarity with the Chinese terms. Impressed with the bronze urn flanked by dragons at the foot of the altar! Seems that it is also one of the pilgrim churches for this Jubilee Year.

Catholic Church offering English services on Sunday at 10 am. The church does not have air conditioning, so dress accordingly. The English service gets full, so plan to arrive early to secure a seat. Beautiful church grounds provide a sanctuary in the busy city
