The Dragon Bridge: Da Nang's Symbol of Prosperity and Modernity

The Dragon Bridge (Cầu Rồng) stands as Da Nang’s most iconic modern structure, dominating the city’s skyline as it gracefully arches over the Han River. Completed in 2013, this magnificent steel structure measures 666 meters long and features a unique design modeled after a majestic dragon of the Ly Dynasty, a powerful symbol of luck, power, and prosperity in Vietnamese culture. The bridge serves a vital function, connecting the city’s main airport route (Nguyen Van Linh Street) directly to the popular My Khe Beach area. Therefore, it represents Da Nang’s ambition and rapid economic growth.

I. Architectural Design and Historical Context

Da Nang organized an international competition to select the bridge’s design, ultimately choosing a concept by American firms Ammann & Whitney Consulting Engineers and The Louis Berger Group. The architecture reflects a modern take on Vietnamese tradition: the dragon symbolizes the city’s desire to reach out to the world, and its tail resembles a blooming lotus flower, a revered symbol of purity. Inaugurated on March 29, 2013, the bridge’s opening commemorated the 38th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation, making it a powerful symbol of resilience and freedom. Over 15,000 LED lights illuminate the bridge at night, creating a breathtaking, constantly changing light display.

II. The Fire and Water Show

The bridge’s most captivating feature is its weekend fire and water performance. People flock to the riverside every week to witness this spectacle.

  • Show Schedule: The dragon breathes fire and water every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening at 9:00 PM sharp.

  • Performance Details: The show typically begins with multiple bursts of fire (around 2 minutes), followed by sprays of water (around 3 minutes). The bridge closes to all vehicular traffic for approximately 15-20 minutes, allowing spectators to gather safely on the bridge and the surrounding streets.

We strongly recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot. Furthermore, spectators standing directly under the dragon’s head should bring a light raincoat, since the water spray often reaches the street below.

III. Essential Visitor Information and Viewing Spots

Plan your visit to the Dragon Bridge efficiently by utilizing these tips.

  • Location/Address: Nguyen Van Linh Street, Phuoc Ninh, Hai Chau District, Da Nang. It crosses the Han River.

  • Ticket/Admission: Viewing the bridge and the fire/water show is completely free of charge.

  • Best Viewing Spots:

    • Tran Hung Dao Street: This street runs directly underneath the dragon’s head on the eastern (Son Tra) side, providing the closest view of the show.

    • Bach Dang Street Promenade: This riverside walk on the western side offers a fantastic panoramic view of the bridge.

    • Han River Cruises: Local vendors sell tickets for boat tours, giving you a unique perspective from the water.

  • Nearby Attractions: You can easily combine your visit with a stroll along the Love Bridge or a walk through the nearby Son Tra Night Market (Chợ Đêm Sơn Trà) after the show.

  • Contact Information: As a public infrastructure, the bridge does not have a direct public telephone number for inquiries; tourists should contact Da Nang’s local tourism information centers for assistance.

After visiting Son Tra Night Market, it's easy to wait for the Dragon Bridge show. While many videos online might not capture the full excitement, the experience in person is more impressive—perhaps because the bridge itself is designed as a majestic dragon.

The show only takes place on weekends at 9 PM. For a good view, consider sitting at the lower part of the bridge. There are small plastic chairs set up by local vendors, and while you’ll need to buy a drink to sit there, it’s a convenient and relaxed way to enjoy the spectacle.

Fire show is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening 9pm. Dont expect a spectacular show since its free but still good to have a look if you are in the area. very crowded ON the bridge but there are plenty other area you can see the fire like under the bridge. there is no need to go early to get a spot.

It spit fire follow by spraying water by the end of show, dont not stay on the bridge because you will get wet, and i mean drenched. by 9:10pm all will be finish.

Fire show is available only during weekends. And it starts from 9pm. Lasted approximately around 10mins. Do not stand near the Dragon head if you do not want to get wet ! As the fire show also includes water too and the water spraying out is very strong.

Highly recommend that you walk the nearby Son Tra night market which is literally next to it and slowly make your way to the bridge when the time is near

For those riding bike, paid parking is available at the night market and is manually attended to by locals. They will wave you in, pass you a carpark coupon and you pay beforehand. Before you leave the parking lot just return them the coupon will do

Pretty cool show on weekends. I watched it from the Love Bridge where you won't get wet at the end. Also great spot for ordering drinks and having a place to sit and observe all the beautiful lights of the city across the Han River.

Nice place to watch the dragon bridge theatrics & flame throwing from the dragon’s mouth! There are few cafes here to watch the scene & the cruise boats on the river but you can easily catch the show from the sidewalk. It gets crowded so come early (20-30 minutes before 9 pm) to pick your best spot to watch.
