Dark Cave (Hang Tối) offers one of Quảng Bình’s most popular and action-packed adventures, uniquely combining exhilarating outdoor activities with true cave exploration. Unlike other caves in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Dark Cave lacks artificial lighting, giving adventurers an authentic, pitch-black caving experience illuminated only by the headlamps they wear.

The Full Adventure Experience

Your journey begins on the Chày River, where the adventure activities are concentrated.

  • Zipline Thrill: You launch your adventure by soaring over the turquoise Chày River on the long zipline, which stretches approximately 400 meters. This thrilling ride transports you directly to the cave entrance tower. A second, shorter zipline is available for those who wish to splash directly into the river at the end of their visit.

  • The Cave Trek: After receiving a helmet and headlamp, you swim a short distance into the cave entrance. Inside, you trek approximately 1,000 meters along a path with rocky and sometimes slippery terrain. The cave’s interior is comprised mainly of black basalt rock, which amplifies the sense of true darkness.

  • Natural Mud Bath: The highlight of the cave trek is the massive, natural mud bath located deep inside. This mud is rich in minerals, and visitors float effortlessly in the buoyant, mineral-laden pool. This unique experience provides a fun, relaxing, and therapeutic break before you exit the cave.

Location and Logistics

Dark Cave is strategically located in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park complex, making it an easy addition to any itinerary that includes Paradise Cave or Phong Nha Cave.

  • Getting There: The site is readily accessible via the Western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway. You can hire a taxi, book a tour package, or rent a motorbike from Phong Nha town to reach the location quickly.

  • Opening Hours: The facility is open daily, typically from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend starting your visit early to avoid the midday crowds, especially during peak season.

Ticket Options and Requirements

The park offers tiered ticketing, allowing visitors to choose their level of adventure.

  • Full Access Package: Approximately 450,000 VND per person. This package includes the long zipline to the cave, the full cave exploration with the mud bath, kayaking on the Chày River, and all necessary safety equipment (helmet, headlamp, life jacket). This option provides the full, unforgettable experience.

  • Limited Access Package: A cheaper option is available (around 250,000 VND), which usually includes river activities and a short zipline but excludes the mud bath and full cave trek.

  • Physical Requirements: Operators strictly enforce a minimum age and height requirement (typically 1.3 meters) for the full adventure, and a weight range (typically 40kg–90kg) for the long zipline, for safety reasons. You must wear swimwear or quick-drying clothes, as you will get wet and muddy.

Our experience was very disappointing. The staff at the reception didn’t explain things clearly. The first activity we did was the zipline, and the person in charge just strapped us quickly and pushed us off without giving us time to prepare or feel ready.

After that, we jumped into the river and went into the Dark Cave. The guide was rushing a lot, not allowing us to enjoy the views inside. Some parts of the cave were slippery and a bit difficult, but instead of guiding us properly, they hurried us to finish quickly.

On the day we visited, the river was dirty because of the rain the day before.

Overall, it was a failed experience and we didn’t enjoy it at all. I really hope the guides improve their attitude and behavior with future visitors.

We decided to only do the water park and kayak for 150k. We like water activities and it was 3 hours of fun for us even though the water was surprisingly chilly. (We decided to skip the Dark Cave and the mud bath and the zip line because the lineup was very long and we just finished the amazing Paradise Cave). We took the kayak up the river (possibly further than we were supposed to). There was no one there. It was so beautiful! Then we went to the water park. The challenge course required lots of strength and we got cheers when we got to the end of it!

Absolutely incredible! Could be the fastest zip line I’ve been on and so much fun! There is so many more activities to do is well! We stayed for an hour or 2 as had to move on but could’ve stayed all day!

I can 100% recommend visiting the Dark Cave in Phong Nha – it was such a wonderful and fun experience! Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be that cool to go deep into a cave, and to do it in complete darkness made it even more special.

One of the highlights was definitely the mud bath inside the cave – the mud is said to be good for your skin, and the whole experience was just so unique and enjoyable. It was messy in the best way possible!

Our guide was incredibly patient and let us take all the time we needed. There was absolutely no rushing, which made the whole tour feel really relaxed and stress-free. The other staff members at the information desk were also very friendly and welcoming.

I’ve read some negative reviews beforehand, but honestly, I don’t understand them at all. Everyone we met was polite, helpful, and respectful – I never felt like I was bothering anyone or that we were being treated in a rushed or unfriendly way.

After the cave part, we also did the water activities, and they were just as fun. Some people online said the water was dirty, but from my experience, the water was very clean – even after heavy rain, it still felt totally fine to swim and enjoy all the water games.

All in all, it was absolutely worth it. I had a great time, and I can truly recommend the Dark Cave experience to anyone looking for a mix of adventure, nature, and fun!

Had a fantastic time here with my group! The zipline over the river was thrilling, and the cave trek and mud bath were super fun (and messy!). There are plenty of water activities, so I highly recommend using the lockers (costs about 50K VND each) and not bringing valuables like phones or cameras unless they’re waterproof and securely strapped. We lost a GoPro in the 20m-deep water, but the staff were incredibly helpful—they even arranged for a local diver to find it for us. Great place for adventure lovers, especially with friends. Don’t miss it if you’re in Phong Nha! It gets crowded.
