Hoàng Liên Station: Your Gateway to Sun World Fansipan Legend and the Roof of Indochina

The Cable Car Station – Sun World Fansipan Legend, specifically the Hoàng Liên Station (Ga Hoàng Liên), serves as the departure point for the awe-inspiring ascent to Fansipan Peak (Fansipan Legend). This modern complex combines a cable car system, spiritual landmarks, and entertainment, creating a world-class tourist destination in the breathtaking mountain town of Sa Pa.

Address: 89B Nguyễn Chí Thanh, TT. Sa Pa, Sa Pa, Lào Cai, Vietnam.

I. The Fansipan Cable Car Experience

The cable car system provides an easy and incredibly scenic alternative to the grueling two-day hike traditionally required to conquer Fansipan.

  • World Records: The system holds two Guinness World Records: the longest non-stop three-rope cable car (6,292.5 meters) and the greatest difference in height between the departure and arrival terminals (1,410 meters).

  • The Journey: The ride lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. During the ascent, passengers enjoy panoramic, cloud-level views of the majestic Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range and the famous Mường Hoa Valley with its cascading rice terraces. The entire complex allows visitors to conquer the “Roof of Indochina” (Nóc nhà Đông Dương) effortlessly.

II. Getting There and Internal Transport

The station is conveniently located just outside Sa Pa town center, offering several transportation options.

  • Mường Hoa Funicular (Muong Hoa Mountain Train): Visitors often start their journey from the Sa Pa Station at the Sun Plaza building in the town center. This funicular takes them on a beautiful 5-10 minute ride directly to the Hoàng Liên Station, the cable car departure point. This trip offers stunning views of the valley even before reaching the main cable car.

  • Local Transport: You can quickly reach the station by taxi or a short motorbike ride from Sa Pa town center (around 10 minutes).

III. Visitor Essentials and Facilities

The complex offers various services and spiritual landmarks to enhance the visitor’s experience both at the base and the summit area.

  • Spiritual Complex: The arrival area near the peak features an extensive spiritual and cultural complex. This includes impressive architectural works like pagodas, temples, and the colossal Great Amitabha Buddha statue, allowing for peaceful sightseeing and reflection.

  • Dining and Shopping: The Hoàng Liên Station and the summit area provide restaurants (e.g., Van Sam, Rose) and cafés. They offer buffet and à la carte options, allowing guests to savor local and international cuisine while enjoying the high-altitude views.

  • Operational Hours and Ticket Prices:

    • Operating Hours: The park generally opens between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM and closes around 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM, but schedules vary by day and season. Always check the current schedule.

    • Ticket Price: Ticket prices change based on height, residency (Lào Cai residents receive a discount), and the day of the week (Saturdays and holidays have surcharges). As of 2025, a round-trip cable car ticket for a non-Lao Cai adult typically costs around 800,000 VND. Additional tickets are required for the Mường Hoa Funicular and the short Fansipan Peak Rail (summit funicular). We strongly recommend purchasing a combo ticket to save time and money.

In conclusion, the Sun World Fansipan Legend Cable Car provides a seamless blend of engineering marvel, natural beauty, and cultural immersion, making it a must-do when traveling to Lào Cai Province.

We had a very great experience here. The buffet lunch was amazing. There are lots of food to choose from. I like thier pansit or the stir friend noodles with vegies. It's tiring since there are still stairs that you need to climb on even if you get the full package. But it's good if you go early in the morning and have a sumptuous lunch before ending the trip. 😊

Been on several cable cars in the past, but not one could compare to the fansipan legend cable car.

Your cable car travelling through valleys and going up to a misty cloud hidden peaks evokes images of wuxia novels and the journey to immortality past human concerns.

Watching yourself rise above visible signs of human habitation, roads, and cities is a philosophical experience in itself, and the descent is also equally fascinating.

For our less fantastically inclined friends, the distance covered and time spent on the ride is much higher than most cable cars.

The cable car goes much faster than initially apparent as well. Even as you watch the way you zip from one pylon to the other, watching the incoming cable car makes the speed which both cable cars are actually travelling easier to see.

We shared our cable car with a party of Vietnamese elders doing some sort of pilgrimage, the peak seems to be a significant Buddhist destination, and I can see why

We had a wonderful experience taking the cable car up Fansipan! We purchased our tickets directly from our hotel (KK Sapa) reception at the same price as the official counters, which was very convenient.

The journey involves three sets of tickets: first a funicular that takes you to the cable car station, then the main cable car ride with stunning views, and finally, once you’re near the top, another funicular to reach the summit. I would highly recommend getting the full set — climbing all the steps to the peak can be quite challenging, especially for older visitors or anyone not used to strenuous activity.

A tip: depending on the weather, make sure to bring a jacket — it can get quite chilly at the top even when it’s warm down in Sapa.

Overall, a must-do experience if you’re visiting Sapa!

This mountain/peak is the Roof of Indochina, with a height of more than 3.000 meters. This was the highlight of our Sapa trip. There are mostly 2 ways to reach the peak, either take the funicular from Sapa central station or drive to this cable car station. The funicular is beautiful but a bit too expensive in my opinion. So you can easily skip it and go directly to this location to take the cable car.
Taking the cable car up was an unforgettable experience, with panoramic views of mountains, clouds, and valleys that looked almost unreal.
This is a well-organized attraction for visitors, and while it can get crowded, the views and the feeling of being above the clouds make it an absolute must-visit in Sapa

Fansipan, the ‘Roof of Indochina,’ is truly breathtaking and worth the journey. Taking the cable car up was an unforgettable experience, with panoramic views of mountains, clouds, and valleys that looked almost unreal. At the top, the air was crisp and cool, and the temples, statues, and viewing decks gave it a peaceful yet grand atmosphere. Climbing the final steps to reach the summit felt rewarding, and standing at the highest point was an amazing moment. It’s well-organized for visitors, and while it can get crowded, the views and the feeling of being above the clouds make it an absolute must-visit in Sapa.
