What Tourists Want to Know

History and Development

  • From Golf Course to Green Space: The area was initially planned and partially developed as an elite golf course in the 1950s but was ultimately abandoned.

  • Public Park Creation: Following the reunification of Vietnam, the vacant land was officially converted into a public park in 1978, named after the former Gia Định Province. This transformation symbolized a commitment to providing accessible public space for the city’s growing population.

  • Modern Expansion: Over the years, the park has been carefully developed with over 1,000 trees of various species, ensuring a continuous, dense canopy that provides cool shade throughout the year.

Key Activities and Cultural Immersion

Gia Dinh Park is famous for its emphasis on relaxation and community engagement:

  • Picnics and Family Time: The park’s expansive 63,000 square meters of wide, manicured grass fields are a primary draw. On weekends, families frequently lay out mats for picnics, games, and outdoor relaxation.

  • Morning Exercise: Like many major Vietnamese parks, Gia Dinh is bustling from dawn until mid-morning with residents practicing Tai Chi, yoga, walking, and jogging. It’s the perfect time to witness the local pace of life.

  • Children’s Playground: The park boasts a large, well-equipped playground area that caters to children of various ages, making it one of the top destinations for families in the northern part of the city.

  • Photography: The lush, well-landscaped environment provides an attractive backdrop for both casual photos and formal outdoor photo shoots.

Amenities and Nearby Attractions

  • Parking: The park usually has a designated, low-cost area for parking motorbikes (fees are typically around 5,000 VND).

  • Food and Drink: Numerous small stalls and street vendors are situated around the park’s periphery, offering fresh coconut water, iced coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá), and popular local snacks.

  • Proximity to Other Parks: Gia Dinh Park is relatively close to Hoang Van Thu Park, another large green space, and is a convenient stop for visitors staying near the airport area (Tân Sơn Nhất).

Tip for Foreign Visitors: If you want a serene experience, avoid the midday heat and visit either very early in the morning to participate in the local fitness scene or in the late afternoon for a relaxing picnic setup. Remember to keep valuables secured, especially in crowded spots.

Gia Định Park in Saigon is one of the city’s largest and most beloved green spaces, offering a welcome escape from the busy streets and traffic. Spread over a vast area, the park is shaded by hundreds of mature trees, making it a refreshing spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy. Its wide pathways are perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling, while the open lawns provide space for family gatherings, group exercises, and community activities.

Early in the morning, the park comes alive with people practicing tai chi, jogging, or simply strolling to start their day.

Children’s playgrounds, fitness equipment, and open areas make it popular with families, while the peaceful corners and benches allow others to relax quietly. Photographers also appreciate the natural light filtering through the trees, creating a soft and inviting atmosphere.

Despite its size and popularity, Gia Định Park manages to maintain a calm and pleasant environment. It is well-kept, clean, and offers a sense of fresh air rarely found in central Saigon. For anyone looking to unwind, exercise, or simply enjoy nature without leaving the city, Gia Định Park is a highly recommended destination.

This park is home to a wide range of bird species. Some lurk in the lush branches looking for caterpillars, others perch boldly on top of tall open branches ready to sally out, catching insects in-flight. Showed here are some of my favorite captures:
1. Common Iora
2. Ashy Tailorbird
3. Ashy Drongo
4. Coppersmith Barbet

The park is beautifully designed, a variety of facilities and natural elements. Lush vegetation, water features, well-laid pathways and trails, comfortable seating areas, a sandy playground, and restrooms enhance its appeal. The thoughtful landscaping serves as the park’s visual backbone, harmonious blend of nature that captivates the senses and evokes tranquility. Though the park is vast and we couldn’t explore it all this time, we’ll definitely return for another visit.
