Hải Vọng Đài Peak: Witness Central Vietnam’s Stunning Panorama

Hải Vọng Đài (Sea Watching Tower) stands at the pinnacle of Bạch Mã National Park, marking the highest point at 1,448 meters above sea level. This strategic location provides visitors with arguably the most expansive and spectacular views in Central Vietnam. Trekking to or driving up to this peak is often the first activity for travelers, offering a majestic introduction to the park’s natural beauty.

I. The View and the Journey to the Summit

The primary reason to visit Hải Vọng Đài is its unparalleled vantage point.

  • Panoramic Vistas: From the tower, you command a dramatic 360-degree view. Look east to see the endless expanse of the Đông Hải (East Sea), the winding shoreline of Lăng Cô Bay, and Chân Mây Port. Turn west to witness the vast, forested peaks of the Annamite Mountain Range and the tranquil Truồi Lake reservoir below.

  • The ‘Cloud Sea’ Phenomenon: If you arrive early in the morning, you may experience the famed “sea of clouds.” Mist often blankets the valleys below, creating a surreal experience where the mountain peaks float above the clouds, earning Bach Ma the nickname ‘mountain of the clouds.’

  • Accessibility: The peak is highly accessible thanks to a well-maintained, winding mountain road. You must hire a car or take a park shuttle service from the Visitor Center to the summit parking area. From there, you complete a short, easy walk to reach the observation tower.

II. Historical Significance and Architecture

Hải Vọng Đài possesses historical depth, making the experience more than just a sightseeing trip.

  • French Colonial Legacy: French colonists discovered the cool climate and scenic beauty of Bạch Mã in the 1930s. They subsequently established a hill station on the summit. They originally constructed the tower as an observation point for military and recreation purposes. You can still explore the nearby ruins of old French villas, demonstrating the area’s colonial past.

  • Meaning of the Name: The name Hải Vọng Đài translates literally as “Sea Watching Tower,” reflecting its function as a perfect viewpoint to observe the ocean and the entire coastal landscape.

III. Practical Visitor Details

To ensure a great visit, plan for the following details.

  • Location: The peak is located deep inside Bạch Mã National Park, approximately 19 km up the main park road from the Visitor Center.

  • Park Entrance Fee: Visiting Hải Vọng Đài is included in the Bạch Mã National Park entrance ticket (generally VND 60,000–65,000 for adults).

  • Operating Hours: The park operates daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend starting your visit early to catch the best views before afternoon mist rolls in and to allow time for other treks, such as the Five Lakes Trail, which starts near the summit area.

  • What to Bring: The summit air is noticeably cooler than the coast, so bring a light jacket. Furthermore, wear comfortable shoes for the short walk to the tower and pack your camera to capture the extensive vistas.

The view is stunning. There is a small gallery about Bach Ma village history description with photos. Pretty interesting. It is windy here, recommended to wear something warm. It was Thursday, not much people around. Not too hard to go up to this mountaint.

We were lucky enough to go cloud hunting at the peak today! The clouds rolling in provided a refreshing mist. The constant sound of the cicadas and peaceful walk were therapeutic. Don't listen to the complainers about not being able to take a motorbike up the mountain road. With a 10% grade on a single lane, it's very dangerous. It's not a money grab, this is a pristine national park that requires safety and rules. We rented our Grab taxi driver from Hue for the day and it was well worth it.

If you plan to go with a motorbike read this.
Once we got to the visitor centre (which is the entrance of the national park and the foot of the mountain) the receptionist told us that we couldn't continue with the motorbike. So to reach the peak and the other main attractions we paid for the tickets (65K each) and for a shuttle car(900K), lucky us we found another couple so we could split the price of the car (1M for 4 people).

It's really worth the visit if the weather is good otherwise don't trust the receptionist who knows nothing about the condition up there.
We asked him if it was still good and safe to go due the clouds (it wasn't raining). He didn't care so much and he gave us all the directions for visiting the peak, 5 lakes and the waterfall. After 5 minutes driving it started pouring, all the way up which is around 40 minutes.
Completely wet after 5 minutes we met a guide who told us to be very careful due to the heavy rain.
Surrounded by the clouds we couldn't enjoy the view at all and we decided to do the 5 lakes track but we stopped at the 3rd because it was unsafe. Even the car driver didn't care at all, he just left us at the pickup point without a warning

Please! If you are a motorbike rider read this. We went thinking that we'll be able to go up we our motorcycle, but is not like that. You need to pay 700k d. por rent a car, this is the only way. Is quite expensive if you're alone. So, I recommend you go there really early, like 8am and if you're lucky you'll find a tour and you only will have to pay them 150k d for all the tour that is almost 4hr.
They pick you for 30min until the top and you can enjoy the view , then go down for the trekking and this is the best part, because there is 5 small lakes and you can swim there. This path is amazing, is not difficult but for sure you will enjoy it.
