Discover the Majestic Hoa Thang Sand Dunes (Bàu Trắng)

The Hoa Thang Tourist Sand Dunes (Đồi cát Du lịch Hòa Thắng), often collectively referred to as Bàu Trắng (White Sand Dunes), represent one of the most stunning and unique landscapes in Binh Thuan Province. Dubbed Vietnam’s “Little Sahara,” this vast expanse of pristine white sand offers a dramatic contrast to the neighboring turquoise coastline, making it an essential stop for any adventurer or photographer.

Core Attractions and Activities

This vast natural wonder provides a perfect playground for high-energy desert activities and peaceful sightseeing.

  • Bàu Trắng Lake (White Lake): A defining feature of the area is the large, clear freshwater lake hidden amidst the towering dunes. This tranquil oasis supports local flora, and in the summer months, the lake surface becomes covered in spectacular pink lotus flowers (Bàu Sen). Visitors can rent small boats or kayaks to appreciate the serene beauty of the lake.

  • Off-Road Adventures: Thrill-seekers actively choose to conquer the dunes using specialized vehicles. You can rent powerful All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or take a thrilling ride in a Jeep driven by skilled locals. These experiences involve fast-paced dune bashing, creating an unforgettable, exciting adventure across the shifting sands.

  • Sand Sliding: A simpler, fun activity for all ages is sand sliding (sandboarding). You can rent a simple board at the base of the dunes for a minimal fee, allowing you to glide down the steep slopes and experience a pure rush of adrenaline.

Culture, History, and Best Times to Visit

The region’s culture is deeply tied to the coastal communities and the unique local ecosystem. The dunes themselves are dynamic; strong winds constantly shift the sand, meaning the landscape you see today may look different tomorrow.

  • Best Time to Visit: Plan your visit for early morning (Sunrise, typically 5:00 AM–9:00 AM) or late afternoon (Sunset, typically 4:00 PM–6:00 PM). During these times, the sunlight is soft and golden, providing the best conditions for photography and ensuring the sand is not scorching hot, making it comfortable to walk barefoot. Furthermore, the light enhances the natural colors of the dunes.

  • Accessibility: The dunes are located approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Phan Thiet City, situated along the picturesque coastal road DT716 (Provincial Road 716), which many regard as one of Central Vietnam’s most scenic routes.

Practical Visitor Information

Make sure you plan your visit, since the area is largely undeveloped and natural.

  • Address: Hoà Thắng, Bắc Bình District, Bình Thuận, Vietnam (This address corresponds to the Bàu Trắng area).

  • Entrance Fee: Visitors typically pay a small entrance fee to the general Bàu Trắng area, approximately 10,000 VND to 15,000 VND per person.

  • Activity Costs: These are additional and typically include:

    • ATV Rental: Approximately 600,000 VND – 800,000 VND for a 20-minute ride (for up to two passengers).

    • Jeep Rental: Approximately 600,000 VND – 800,000 VND per Jeep for a short tour (up to 6–8 passengers).

    • Sandboard Rental: Approximately 20,000 VND – 30,000 VND per use.

  • Essential Tips: Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, and choose light, comfortable clothing. Vendors offer some drinks, but bring your own snacks, as permanent dining options are limited.

It is generally nice to see. Nothing super spectacular. Annoying prices of the companies selling you car or quad rides. It's not so massive so u can easily walk around

White Sand Dunes. The name really nails it: they’re dunes. And they’re white. Slow clap for whoever came up with that marketing gem.

What’s waiting for you? Sand. Miles of it. A sun so aggressive it makes your sunscreen cry. And, if you’re really into pain, overpriced ATVs you can rent to tear around like a knockoff Mad Max extra while a local watches his suspension die in real time.

But here’s the kicker: you get to pay for this privilege. Fifteen thousand dong to enter. Ten thousand dong to park. Yes, dong is the currency. Stop giggling, you filthy, filthy humans, I know exactly what’s running through your minds. Every tourist reads the price list and suddenly reverts to middle school. Meanwhile, the locals are taking your dongs with the biggest poker face ever, thinking, “Yup, another foreigner paying real money to sweat in a sandbox.”

So, congratulations. You’ve just shelled out 25,000 dong for the chance to roast alive while sand gets into places your doctor doesn’t want to hear about. Sure, the dunes are kinda pretty if you squint through the sweat dripping into your eyes. But after five minutes you’ll realize you could’ve spent the same cash on iced coffee and actually enjoyed being alive.

It’s basically Tatooine. But without lightsabers, without the Force, and without a young Harrison Ford to distract you. Just you, the sand, and the crushing realization that you paid for it.

Avoid this tourist trap!

We went to the White Sand Dunes with a Jeep tour. The driver asked if we wanted to rent ATVs (800k for 20 minutes), and we agreed after seeing new, powerful quads at the entrance. He confirmed we’d use those good ones, so we agreed and were told to pay upfront. Our driver, who actually worked for the ATV company, told the ticket seller to let us ride first and pay later, claiming he would “lend” us money

But here’s the catch:

They took us up the hill on good quads, disappeared for 5 minutes, and returned with completely different, old, and damaged ATVs (see the attached photo). These were smaller, less powerful, and frankly dangerous-looking. Feeling cheated, we decided not to ride at all.

Then it got worse:

We asked how to return, and they said it was free. They took us down by ATV, only to demand 300,000 VND per person afterward—for a mere 2-minute ride! This charge was never mentioned earlier. It’s literally just a 15-20 minute walk you can easily do yourself (if it’s in the morning)

Luckily, we argued strongly enough that they finally let us go, mostly because our driver had “approved” our delayed payment arrangement.

So
- Don’t rent ATVs here; it’s a scam.
- Visit independently and just walk up — it’s easy and free.
- Red Sand Dunes were way better anyway.

Stay safe and save your money!

The White Sand Dunes in Mui Ne, while a bit farther from the town itself, are definitely worth the visit. This vast expanse of white sand desert offers a thrilling adventure, especially with the larger dunes that provide plenty of space for off-road activities. You have two main options for exploring the dunes: hiring a private ATV or opting for a jeep ride. Walking across the vast area is not recommended, as the sand makes it tiring and the distance is considerable. We decided to hire an ATV for about 800,000 VNĐ for a 20-minute ride, which seemed a bit pricey but was totally worth it for the fun and excitement it offered. We visited around sunset, which added a magical touch to the experience. The highlight was being able to drive the ATV ourselves, with a local guide accompanying us to ensure safety. The real adrenaline rush came when the guide took over the controls, speeding through the dunes and navigating different terrains with skill. Overall, it's a thrilling and memorable experience that’s highly recommended for anyone visiting Mui Ne.

I recently visited the White Sand Dunes and had a pretty good experience overall. I loved the dunes, but I went during the rainy season, so the sky was a bit unpredictable. Still, it was quite a sight! The place is easy to access, and there are lots of locals offering sand sliding for just 3000 VND – you can slide to your heart's content.

I also took an ATV ride, and the driver had great skills, taking me to every corner and up some steep dunes. It was quite the adventure! However, I do think it would be even better to visit during the sunny season or summer for clearer skies and better views.

There was no traffic during my visit, which was a plus. The guides were friendly and helped me take some photos, though their photography skills were just okay. They offer tours starting at 4:30 AM or 1:00 PM, so you have options depending on what time of day you'd like to explore. Overall, it was a fun experience despite the weather!
