Kiep Bac Temple (Den Kiep Bac) is one of the most significant historical and spiritual sites in Northern Vietnam. It is dedicated to Tran Hung Dao (born Tran Quoc Tuan), the Supreme Commander of the Tran Dynasty who successfully led Vietnamese forces to repel three major Yuan-Mongol invasions in the 13th century. The temple forms the crucial military-historical component of the Con Son – Kiep Bac Special National Relic Complex.
History and National Heroism
Military Headquarters: The area was Tran Hung Dao‘s main military base and strategic command post during the Mongol invasions. Its location, situated by the Luc Dau River, was geographically ideal for defense.
National Recognition: Kiep Bac is closely associated with the life and death of Tran Hung Dao, a figure so revered that he is worshipped as a saint in Vietnamese popular religion. The site was recognized as a National Heritage in 1962 and a Special National Heritage in 2012.
Other Great Men: The wider Con Son – Kiep Bac complex is also connected to Nguyen Trai (1380−1442), a famous poet, scholar, and strategist, recognized as a Great Man of Culture of the World.

Culture and Major Festivals
Kiep Bac is most famous for its grand annual festivals, which attract hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
Autumn Festival (The Main Event): The most important festival is held annually in the 8th lunar month (typically September). It commemorates the death of Tran Hung Dao.
Key Rituals: The festival features solemn traditional rituals, including a procession, an incense offering ceremony, a military festival reenactment, and a spectacular boat race along the Luc Dau River.
Spring Festival: A separate festival is held in the spring, often associated with the Buddhist traditions of the nearby Con Son Pagoda.
Intangible Heritage: The Con Son – Kiep Bac festivals were recognized as national intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
