Nhà Thờ Chính Tòa Phủ Cam (Phu Cam Cathedral): A Modern Icon in the Ancient Capital
Phủ Cam Cathedral stands as the heart of the Hue Archdiocese and a striking architectural landmark in the city. Perched atop Phước Quả Hill, it offers panoramic views and a unique blend of Western classical tradition and Vietnamese modernist design. Its history stretches back over three centuries, making it one of the oldest Catholic sites in Central Vietnam.
I. Historical Evolution: From Bamboo Chapel to Modern Masterpiece
The site’s history began in 1682 when a French priest, Father Langlois, established a simple bamboo and thatch chapel nearby. Throughout the 17th to 19th centuries, the church faced periods of persecution and reconstruction. Bishop Eugène Marie Allys later completed a Gothic-style cathedral on the hill in 1902.
However, the current, iconic structure emerged from a design by the renowned Vietnamese architect Ngô Viết Thụ in the 1960s. Construction began in 1963 but endured decades of interruption due to political turmoil. Finally, the cathedral reached its completion in the year 2000, cementing its status as a symbol of the local Catholic community’s resilience and faith.
II. Architecture and Design: A Fusion of East Meets West
Phủ Cam Cathedral is celebrated for its bold, modernist architecture, a significant departure from the Gothic style of its predecessor.
The Design: Architect Ngô Viết Thụ conceived the structure on a cross-shaped foundation. The exterior prominently features two soaring concrete bell towers, which symbolically represent hands clasped in prayer, lending a spiritual aspiration to the entire building.
The Interior: You will discover a vast interior space capable of accommodating up to 2,500 worshippers. The design employs soft, curving concrete pillars that gently bend forward, creating a spacious and open atmosphere. Above, beautiful stained-glass windows flood the nave with vibrant light. Furthermore, a large crucifix, crafted from pine wood from Thien An Hill, dominates the central altar, showcasing a blend of modern technique and traditional sacred elements.
