Phương Mai Sand Dunes presents a surreal and stunning natural spectacle in Bình Định Province. This vast, undulating landscape offers a desert-like experience right next to the sea, making it one of the most distinctive and highly photographed spots near Quy Nhơn. The strong sea winds continuously reshape the dunes, ensuring a new view with every visit.
Traveler's Focus: Unique Landscape and Thrilling Activities
Visitors flock to Phương Mai for its visual splendor and adrenaline-pumping fun.
Sandboarding Thrills: The most popular activity is sandboarding. The dunes reach heights of up to 100 meters, providing steep slopes perfect for sliding. Travelers often rent wooden or plastic boards from local vendors near the base to glide down the warm, golden sand. This provides an exciting challenge for both beginners and seasoned adventurers.
Photography Paradise: The ever-changing patterns and sweeping curves of the sand offer endless photographic opportunities. The combination of the golden dunes, the deep blue of the East Sea, and the surrounding green mountains creates a spectacular contrast. Aim for the golden hour—sunrise or sunset—to capture the most dramatic light and shadows.
Panoramic Views: Climbing the highest dunes rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic vistas of the entire Phương Mai Peninsula, the vast Thi Nại Lagoon, and the distant cityscape of Quy Nhơn. You can even see wind turbines gracefully turning on the horizon.
Nearby Attractions: Phương Mai Sand Dunes often form a convenient part of a day trip that includes the pristine Kỳ Co Beach and the picturesque Eo Gió (Windy Pass). Locals commonly link these three sites.
Practical Visitor Information
Planning your visit requires attention to the intense Central Vietnamese sun.
Entrance Fee: The site itself charges no entrance fee, allowing free access to the dunes. However, visitors typically pay small fees for parking or the rental of sandboards from local operators.
Recommended Visiting Hours: To avoid the scorching midday heat, we strongly recommend visiting during the early morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) or the late afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM). These times ensure the sand is cool enough for bare feet and the light is best for photos.
Getting There: The dunes are located about 20 km from Quy Nhơn center. Most travelers cross the Thị Nại Bridge (Vietnam’s longest sea bridge) by motorbike, taxi, or a booked tour. From the main road, a short walk is required to reach the main dune area.
What to Bring: Carry sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, water, and perhaps a light scarf to protect against the wind and sun. Wear light, breathable clothing.
