Pongour Falls (Thác Pongour): The Southern Highlands’ Masterpiece

Pongour Falls (Thác Pongour) stands as one of the most magnificent natural wonders in Vietnam, earning the title “Nam Thiên Đệ Nhất Thác” (The Greatest Waterfall of the Southern Highlands) from King Bảo Đại. Located approximately 50 kilometers south of Da Lat in Đức Trọng District, this impressive site features water cascading down a volcanic rock system that creates seven distinct, layered steps. The waterfall drops nearly 40 meters and stretches over 100 meters wide during the rainy season, delivering a truly powerful, thunderous spectacle.

History, Legend, and Culture

Pongour Falls is not only a natural wonder but also a deeply symbolic location, entwined with local ethnic folklore.

  • The Legend: Local K’Ho people share a beautiful legend about a female chieftain named Kanai. She led her tribe and, with the help of four loyal rhinoceroses, transformed the wilderness into arable land. When Kanai passed away on the full moon day of the first lunar month, the rhinoceroses remained by her grave until they, too, died. Her hair is said to have transformed into the stunning waterfall, and the four rhinos became the moss-covered rocks at the foot of the cascade.

  • Cultural Celebration: The K’Ho people celebrate a festival at the waterfall on the 15th day of the first lunar month (usually February), making this an ideal time for cultural visitors.

Visiting Experience and Best Time to Go

The area surrounding the falls covers over 2.5 hectares of pristine, rich forest, offering a tranquil escape from city life.

  • Rainy Season (May – October): This period showcases Pongour in its full glory. The heavy water flow creates a violent, white-foam curtain over the seven steps, demonstrating its majestic power. Be mindful, however, as the pathways leading down to the base can be muddy and slippery.

  • Dry Season (November – April): The water flow is gentler during these months, appearing more like soft, silky curtains pouring over the green, mossy rocks. The dry season provides safer hiking conditions and excellent light for photography.

  • Activities: Visitors typically hike down the gently sloping paths to the waterfall’s base, where they can enjoy picnicking, photography, and simply soaking in the immense natural beauty. The large pool at the base is perfect for admiring the seven-tiered view.

Practical Visitor Information

  • Address: Thôn Tân Nghĩa, Đức Trọng District, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam.

  • Getting There: The falls are located far outside the Da Lat city center (approx. 50 km). Visitors generally travel by rented motorbike, private car, or as part of a countryside day tour from Da Lat.

  • Operating Hours: Pongour Falls is usually open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

  • Entrance Fee (Reference Price): Admission is very affordable, typically ranging from 20,000 VND to 40,000 VND for adults and 10,000 VND for children. A small fee is also charged for parking motorbikes.

  • Tips for Visiting: Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, especially for the steep descent to the falls. Bring water and snacks, as amenities at the bottom are limited. Always respect the natural environment and leave no trace.

A very beautiful place! The waterfalls are stunning and the whole area looks amazing. The path down can be a bit slippery, especially after rain, so proper shoes are recommended. The descent includes many steps with a handrail. There’s also a golf cart service to take you back up (for a fee of 15,000 per person).

After seeing the incredible Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Vietnam–China border last month, I wasn’t sure anything could come close but Pongour Falls certainly gives it competition. If I were here in peak rainy season, I might even rate it equal.

The falls are truly spectacular, cascading across multiple levels of volcanic rock. I honestly lost count of how many individual streams flowed into the catchment below it’s a broad, dramatic scene that’s hard to capture in just one photo. The setting feels untouched and raw, yet well-maintained enough for visitors.

You can reach the base of the falls by walking down a lengthy but scenic staircase, or catch a motorbike ride for just 15,000 VND. Once down there, the panoramic view is rewarding, especially with the lush greenery surrounding the area and the thunderous sound of the water.

There are warning signs not to climb or swim too close, and it’s worth respecting them the flow is strong and the rocks slippery. The viewing platforms and bridges offer safe, scenic vantage points.

Pongour Falls is a must-visit if you’re in Da Lat, and even more impressive during the rainy season when the volume of water really shows off the power of nature
