September 23rd Park (Công viên 23 Tháng 9) is one of the largest and most historically significant public parks in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Spanning a long strip of land in District 1, it serves as a crucial green lung, a cultural hub, and a key transportation and leisure center for both residents and tourists.

I. History & Significance

  • Origin of the Name: The park is named to commemorate the start of the Southern Resistance Day (September 23, 1945), marking the day the Vietnamese people rose up against the French colonial forces attempting to reoccupy Saigon after World War II.

  • Former Railway Station: Historically, the site of the park was home to the original Saigon Railway Station, constructed by the French in the 19th century. After the station was relocated in 1975, the land was transformed into the present-day park.

  • Modern Development: The park has undergone continuous development, recently incorporating modern, multi-use spaces, including underground commercial and transit facilities, while maintaining its function as a vital public green space. The Bến Thành Metro Station is located beneath the park.

II. Visitor Experience (What to See and Do)

  • Relaxation and Exercise: The wide lawns and shady, tree-lined pathways make it a popular spot for locals performing morning exercises (like Tai Chi), jogging, or simply relaxing under the trees during the day.

  • Cultural Events and Fairs: The park is a primary venue for large-scale public and cultural events throughout the year, including the annual Spring Flower Fair (Hội Hoa Xuân) for the Tết holiday. If you visit, check for any ongoing festivals or fairs.

  • Shopping and Dining:

    • Taka Plaza (Shopping): An indoor market where you can find a variety of goods, including clothing, souvenirs, and accessories at reasonable prices.

    • Asiana Food Town (Dining): A complex that offers a wide range of local and international cuisines, perfect for satisfying your appetite after exploring.

  • Proximity to Tourist Hotspots: Its location is ideal, situated directly across from the famous Bùi Viện Walking Street (Backpacker Street) and just a short walk from the iconic Bến Thành Market.

It is a very nice park. Good for jogging. A bit crowded during the day. Feels safe and well lit at night. There are exercise installations like dip bars and pullup bars. The toilets are actually vlean and actually free. Very romantic place.

Excellent massage. Highly recommended. Price wise slightly more than other places but it is worth it.

They have shower facilities and places to store luggage. If you have long layover before your flight, can definitely come to this place.

Love this park, as I live just in front of it. Everything there is so convenient for a morning walk, early bodyweight, and calisthenics exercise routine. Getting to admire and take a look at the local lifestyle, their habits, the share of friendship, and love with their family. Even though that place is located in the heart of Saigon, which will be eternally busy as hell, going there seems to give a sentiment and feeling that everything that can happen to you today will be okay. You are going to be fine just by going to that park and that's the most beautiful and tranquil part of it

This park is excellent, conveniently located near the car gate. Many people come here to relax, and it's perfect for families. Kids can have fun playing on the playground while adults enjoy a peaceful rest in the park

We visited the park on September 23rd, hoping to find the playground shown in pictures.

Unfortunately, there was no playground. The exercise equipment was quite old, but I guess it’s better than nothing, right?

Beware, though, we spotted quite a few mice around. Not recommended for children to play here.

However, if your kids need a place to run around, this might still help 😂.

Despite that, we still managed to have a good time!
