A Splash of Pink in the City's Heart

Tân Định Church, officially the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is instantly recognizable for its unforgettable, vivid salmon-pink façade, a color applied during a major renovation in 1957. This cheerful hue, a stark contrast to the city’s mostly muted tones, is said by locals to symbolize God’s love and the community’s resilience. It has become a global icon and one of the most photographed landmarks in Vietnam. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the soft sunlight enhances the rosy glow for the most stunning photographs.

A Deep History Beyond the Paint

Built by French colonists between 1870 and 1876, this is one of the oldest and the second-largest church in Ho Chi Minh City, after the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Its architecture is a grand combination of Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles.

  • Towers of Grandeur: The centerpiece is the tall main tower, which reaches over 52 meters (170 feet) and is topped with a bronze cross. Inside the tower are five massive bells, weighing a total of 5.5 tons.

  • A Pioneer of Charity: The church’s founding priest, Father Donatien Éveillard (whose tomb is in the crypt), was a pioneer, establishing an adjacent orphanage and a religious publishing house to teach disadvantaged children a trade—making the church a historical center for social work, not just worship.

Visiting the Living Church

Tân Định remains a fully active parish and a spiritual hub for the local Catholic community, which means visitors must be mindful and respectful of its primary purpose.

  • Free Entrance: There is no fee to admire the exterior and the peaceful courtyard.

  • Interior Access: Entry to the sanctuary is generally restricted to parishioners and those attending a Mass. Visitors are typically not allowed inside during non-service hours to preserve the sanctity of the space.

  • Dress Code: As with all religious sites, modest dress is required (shoulders and knees covered).

  • Mass Times (Approximate):

    • Weekdays: 5:00 AM, 6:15 AM, 5:30 PM, 7:00 PM.

    • Sundays: Multiple services from early morning to evening.

  • Location: The church is conveniently located at 289 Hai Bà Trưng Street in District 3, slightly north of the main District 1 tourist area. The surrounding neighborhood is a vibrant mix of local cafes, street food vendors, and small shops, offering an authentic taste of daily Saigon life right next to the famous landmark.

Parking inside for scooters 🛵 You get given a parking card & pay on exit. I paid 5000, around 14pence in English money for 90 minutes.

When I first visited Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, this was one of the must visit attractions in the midst of a tight-schedule drinking trip. This return trip with my queen is a must to visit! We weren’t lucky to meet the timing to enter and have a look but it’s fun to visit. Something I didn’t notice in 2019 was the Jesus statue that resembles the one in Rio, Brazil and Vung Tau.

Pastel pink, elegant, and gently charming — this beautiful church is truly a sight to behold. Although I couldn’t go inside, its exterior alone is worth the visit. You can’t help but feel the unique charm and sense of style that is so distinctly Vietnamese.

I visited the Tân Định Catholic Church and was immediately struck by its striking pink façade it’s hard to miss and even harder not to admire. The architecture is incredibly well preserved, with intricate white trim details that add elegance and contrast beautifully with the pastel exterior. It’s known for its vivid color, the church was ia popular photo stop for tourists and locals alike. During my visit, I noticed many tour groups arriving to appreciate and photograph the church from various angles.

Unfortunately, the church was closed when I arrived, which was a bit disappointing as I was keen to see the interior. However, even from the outside, it’s a visual delight and definitely worth visiting. The surrounding grounds were tidy and enhanced by religious statues and floral arrangements, adding to the peaceful, reverent atmosphere.

Built in the 1870s during the French colonial period, Tân Định Church is one of the oldest and most iconic Roman Catholic churches in the city. It reflects a blend of Gothic and Romanesque design influences, topped with a towering spire that dominates the streetscape.

If you’re in Ho Chi Minh City and enjoy architecture, photography, or historical landmarks, this is one spot you shouldn’t miss.

Looks nice but is only a spot for photos. During a mass you can't go inside the premises. But even if you can go behind the gate you can't enter and look inside. At 4 pm on this Friday they closed the gate. If you are still interested in going half around :)

The church itself is beautiful and stunning. I combined the visit with a stop in the Café opposite the church. Stunning view, chill vibes and wifi there ;)
