What Tourists Want to Know

History and Significance

  • The Tunnel: The park is built near the entrance of the Thủ Thiêm Tunnel, Vietnam’s first river-crossing submerged tunnel and the most modern in Southeast Asia when it opened in 2011. This tunnel is a key piece of infrastructure connecting the historic downtown (District 1) with the developing new urban area of Thủ Thiêm (Thủ Đức City).

  • Urban Transformation: The area around the tunnel entrance was once quiet and undeveloped. Its transformation into a popular, bustling park symbolizes the rapid modernization and urban expansion of Ho Chi Minh City.

Unique Experiences and Attractions

The park is defined by its incredible view and energetic local atmosphere:

  • The Iconic View: This is the main draw. From the embankment, you get a postcard-perfect view of the entire District 1 skyline, featuring the Bitexco Financial Tower and the towering Landmark 81 skyscraper. This perspective is considered one of the best “million-dollar views” in the city.

  • Sunset and Night Views: Visitors flock here to watch the stunning sunset over the Saigon River, followed by the dazzling display of the city lights at night.

  • Local Street Food Paradise: The park is famous for its vibrant street food culture. Numerous vendors set up stalls offering classic Saigon snacks, known locally as a “snack heaven.” Popular items include:

    • Bánh Tráng Nướng (Grilled Rice Paper Pizza)

    • Cút Lộn Xào Me (Quail Eggs Stir-fried with Tamarind Sauce)

    • Trà Chanh (Iced Lemon Tea)

  • Recreational Hub: The wide, open space is ideal for simple leisure activities. You will frequently see people flying kites in the late afternoon breeze, picnicking, or simply relaxing with friends.

Culture and Local Tips

  • Relaxed Atmosphere: Unlike the crowded, bustling energy of District 1, the park offers a relaxed, ‘chill’ vibe, making it a favorite spot for local dates and social gatherings.

  • Picnic Spot: Bring a mat, some refreshments, and enjoy an affordable riverside picnic while watching the city light up.

  • Safety Note: While generally safe, be aware of crowds, especially on weekend evenings, and keep your personal belongings secure. Some vendors may charge slightly higher “tourist prices,” so a polite request for the price before ordering is wise.

The Saigon Riverside is definitely worth a visit, especially in the late afternoon or evening when the heat starts to fade and the city lights reflect beautifully on the water. It’s a great spot for a relaxing walk, people-watching, or just taking a breather from the chaos of the city. There’s a long promenade with benches, trees, and open space – perfect for couples, families, or solo travelers.

The vibe is chill but lively. Locals come out to exercise, street performers play music, and food vendors pop up here and there, adding some authentic local flavor. You can also spot some boats and dinner cruises along the water, which add a touch of romance and charm.

However, it’s not all perfect. Parts of the river still have some litter, and if you walk further from the center, some areas start to feel a bit neglected or less well-maintained. And it can get crowded, especially on weekends, with scooters zooming by and a lot of noise.

Still, it’s a refreshing change from the usual traffic-packed streets of Saigon, and a beautiful place to unwind near the heart of the city. Would I come back? Absolutely. Just not expecting perfection. Solid 4 stars!
