Thuan Phuoc Bridge (Cầu Thuận Phước): The Elegant Gateway to the Sea
The Thuan Phuoc Bridge is an engineering marvel and a defining feature of Da Nang’s coastal landscape. Stretching nearly two kilometers, it holds the distinction of being the longest suspension bridge in Vietnam. The bridge elegantly crosses the lower part of the Han River, connecting the city’s main districts (Hai Chau) with the coastal areas and Son Tra Peninsula. Its strategic location marks the point where the river flows into the East Sea, creating a spectacular backdrop for photographers and tourists.
I. Architecture and Historical Context
The construction of Thuan Phuoc Bridge began in 2003 and officially opened on July 19, 2009. This project played a crucial role in modernizing Da Nang’s transportation infrastructure, providing a vital four-lane link between the inner city and the ports. The structure features two prominent, modern towers (pylons) that stand 80 meters tall. Engineers designed the bridge to evoke the image of a strip of silk reaching out to the ocean, symbolizing Da Nang’s dynamic energy and global aspirations. Furthermore, consulting firms from countries like China, Cuba, and Canada assisted with the complex engineering, showcasing a global collaboration on a key Vietnamese landmark.
II. The Best Time to Visit
Thuan Phuoc Bridge is primarily a functional bridge, meaning it does not host nightly fire or water shows like the Dragon Bridge. Consequently, its main appeal for tourists is the majestic panoramic views it offers, particularly during the “golden hours.”
Sunrise and Sunset: We highly recommend visiting in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM, to capture the breathtaking sunset. The bridge offers an unobstructed view of the sun dipping below the mountains on the western horizon, casting vibrant hues across the Han River and Da Nang Bay.
Nighttime Illumination: After dark, the bridge comes alive. A sophisticated LED lighting system illuminates the suspension cables and towers, transforming the structure into a brilliant, colorful spectacle that reflects beautifully on the water.
III. Essential Visitor Information
Plan your peaceful visit to this architectural gem.
Location/Access: The bridge connects Nguyen Tat Thanh Street (west end) and Le Duc Tho Street (east end). It is easily accessible by taxi, Grab, or motorbike from the city center.
Ticket/Admission: Crossing the bridge is free of charge, as it is a public road.
Best Viewing Spots: Pedestrians can safely walk along the designated sidewalks. For the best photos, visit the abutment area or the riverbank near the foot of the bridge on the Nguyen Tat Thanh side, where you can capture the entire structure against the sunset.
Visitor Tip: Be mindful of the strong winds when walking along the bridge, due to its height and exposed location at the river mouth. Also, remember to arrange for return transportation, since the eastern side is less developed and offers fewer services than the city center.
Contact: The bridge operates as public infrastructure; contact a local Da Nang tourism information center for traveler-specific queries.
