Truong Tien Bridge (Cầu Trường Tiền): Hue's Illuminated Historical Heart
The Trường Tiền Bridge is more than just a crossing over the Hương River (Perfume River); it represents the historical and cultural soul of Hue. I. A History Forged in Steel and War
The bridge’s history begins in 1896 when King Thành Thái commissioned its construction to modernize the city.
Designed by Eiffel: The famed engineer Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the Eiffel Tower, designed the bridge. His company completed the construction in 1899, making it one of the first Western-engineered steel bridges in Indochina.
Architectural Style: The bridge features six magnificent steel arches, often described as comb-shaped or Gothic in style, giving the 402.6-meter-long structure a graceful and enduring elegance.
A Shifting Identity: The bridge has borne several names throughout its existence, reflecting the political changes in Vietnam. It started as Thanh Thai Bridge, became Clémenceau Bridge during the French colonial era, and finally settled on the popular name Truong Tien, derived from a nearby Nguyễn Dynasty mint (Trường Tiền). It survived massive floods and was severely damaged and repaired multiple times during the Vietnam-France and Vietnam-America Wars, proving its resilience.
