Tuc Dup Hill: An Enduring Fortress of History and Nature
Tuc Dup Hill (Đồi Tức Dụp) is nestled in the Tri Tôn District of An Giang Province, standing as a key historical and cultural site within the Thất Sơn (Seven Mountains) region. Although only reaching about 216 meters, its rugged terrain and network of natural granite caves transformed it into an impregnable revolutionary base during the Vietnam War. This site attracts history buffs and nature lovers alike.
History and the "Two Million Dollar Hill" Legend
The hill earned its nickname, the “Two Million Dollar Hill,” after the massive amount of money the US Army and the Saigon government spent on explosives and resources in an attempt to flatten this strategic outpost. Despite a relentless 128-day assault with heavy bombardment, including B-52 bombers, the local forces and resilient terrain held firm.
The War Legacy: The unique geology provided a perfect network of over 100 interlocking natural caves and crevices, which the Vietnamese soldiers skillfully adapted into an underground society. They used the caves as command centers, infirmaries, food depots, and living quarters. Today, visitors can explore these tunnels, allowing them to vividly imagine the challenging conditions faced by the soldiers and local people.
