Tuyền Lâm Lake: Da Lat's Romantic Eco-Tourism Paradise

Tuyền Lâm Lake (Hồ Tuyền Lâm) translates literally to “Stream-Forest Lake” (Tuyền means stream, Lâm means forest), accurately describing its beautiful location where water and woodland converge. Situated about 7 kilometers south of Da Lat city center, this large artificial freshwater lake spans over 350 hectares. The Vietnamese government recognized the lake as a national-level landscape and tourist resort due to its crystal-clear water, serene atmosphere, and surrounding pine-covered hills. Consequently, it attracts nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

History and Development

Tuyền Lâm Lake did not exist naturally; instead, engineers created it in 1987 by damming the Tia Stream (Suối Tía).

  • Purpose: Originally, the dam served irrigation purposes for the downstream areas of Đức Trọng District.

  • Evolution: However, its strategic location near Phụng Hoàng Mountain and the year-round blue waters quickly established the area as a prime spot for rest and eco-tourism. Today, the lake has numerous resorts and cafes scattered around its banks, further enhancing its appeal as a quiet retreat.

Must-Do Activities and Experiences

Tuyền Lâm Lake offers a wide array of activities that actively engage visitors with the surrounding nature.

  • Kayaking and Boat Tours: Renting a kayak or paddleboard (SUP) allows you to glide across the tranquil surface, reaching hidden coves and enjoying the reflections of the pine forests. For a less strenuous experience, visitors hire a boat tour to cruise around the lake, often stopping at scenic points.

    • Activity Costs: Prices for boat tours or kayaking rentals typically range from 150,000 VND to 500,000 VND, depending on the duration and type of trip.

  • Hiking and Viewpoints: The surrounding area, including the trails leading up Pinhatt Mountain, offers excellent hiking opportunities. These routes actively lead trekkers to breathtaking viewpoints where they capture stunning photos of the lake and surrounding mountains.

  • Camping and Sunset Watching: Many picturesque spots around the lake are ideal for overnight camping. Tourists love this activity because they watch the sunrise over the mist-shrouded lake and enjoy a BBQ campfire dinner.

  • Cultural Visit: The Thiền Viện Trúc Lâm Zen Monastery sits high above the lake on Phụng Hoàng Mountain, easily accessible from the lake area via a long stone staircase or the nearby cable car station.

Practical Visitor Information

  • Address: VCXP+RW8, Hoa Cẩm Tú Cầu, Phường 3, Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam (Located near Datanla Waterfall and the Truc Lam Zen Monastery).

  • Entrance Fee: Access to the Tuyền Lâm Lake area itself is free of charge. Fees only apply to specific activities (boat, kayak, camping, etc.) or attractions (like the cable car).

  • Opening Hours: As a natural body of water, the lake is accessible all day. However, tourist services and rental shops typically operate from approximately 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

  • Getting There: The lake is about a 15-20 minute drive from the city center. Visitors commonly use taxis, Grab motorbikes, or rented scooters to reach the destination via Prenn Pass.

Despite the wind and cold weather like the mountains climate knows how to blow, the scenery and calmness of the lake was perfectly reflecting the colors of the sky I had the chance to get on this day. The drive is also nice and not that far away from the city Da Lat and really close to the famous waterfall that is down below a few hundred meters away. Recommended also for sunset, which I didn't yet get the chance to see, but the colors of the sky would fit astonishingly the blue lake underneath.

I visited this lake before when the dam was all dried out, but this time I was pleasantly surprised to see the water rushing through! It’s such a cool spot to relax and take pictures, especially if you’re out exploring the Dalat area. The atmosphere by the lake is so peaceful, with the sound of the water and the surrounding nature.

If you have a bit of extra time, I highly recommend continuing around the lake to take in all the views. The scenery just keeps getting better, and you won’t regret it! It’s also a fantastic place to stop by if you’re heading to Happy Hill to snap even more pictures. Definitely a hidden gem worth visiting if you’re in the area!

Nice for sightseeing, but not much else. Worth visiting if you took the cable car or are in the area.

Very nice few over the lake!

But don’t go out of your way to only come here, include it in your day. You can walk here easy from the monastery after taking the cable car.
