Vũng Chùa – Yến Island (Vũng Chùa – Đảo Yến) is a mesmerizing coastal area in Northern Quảng Bình. This destination offers a unique blend of pristine natural scenery and deep historical resonance, largely because it is the final resting place of the revered Vietnamese military leader, General Võ Nguyên Giáp. Travelers visit this site primarily to pay their respects and to admire the area’s peaceful, secluded beauty.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The area holds a particularly sacred position in the hearts of the Vietnamese people.

  • General Giáp’s Mausoleum: The most compelling reason to visit is the tomb of General Võ Nguyên Giáp, located on Thọ Sơn Mountain (Núi Thọ) on the Mũi Rồng (Dragon’s Cape) peninsula. The General personally selected this spot for its stunning and auspicious location, which features the ‘Dragon Coiling, Tiger Sitting’ geological formation (Thế Rồng Cuộn Hổ Ngồi), with the mountain range protecting the back and the cape facing the vast East Sea. The simple yet dignified design of the tomb reflects the General’s character.

  • A Spiritual Journey: Every day, thousands of visitors arrive from across the country and the world to offer incense and pay homage to the hero. This constant stream of respectful visitors emphasizes the deep appreciation and gratitude the nation feels for his contributions to history.

Natural Beauty: Vũng Chùa and Yến Island

Beyond its spiritual importance, Vũng Chùa – Yến Island attracts tourists with its untouched coastal environment.

  • Vũng Chùa (Pagoda Bay): Local legends indicate the name Vũng Chùa (Pagoda Bay) originated from a sacred pagoda that stood here centuries ago. This naturally sheltered bay provides a calm, pristine beach with white sand and clear blue water. Its geography offers protection from storms, making it a safe haven for local fishing boats.

  • Yến Island (Đảo Yến): Just a short distance from the shore lies Yến Island (also called Hòn Nồm). The island received its modern name, Yến Island (Swallow Island), because large flocks of swallows/swifts (chim yến) return here annually to build nests and live in the rugged caves. Currently, the island remains largely undeveloped for mass tourism, preserving its wild, unpolished beauty. You can hire a small boat from local fishermen to venture closer and observe the fascinating birdlife.

Visitor Information and Guidelines

Visitors should be aware of specific protocols, especially when visiting the General’s tomb.

  • Entrance and Fees: The site imposes no entrance fee for Vũng Chùa or the General’s tomb area. This allows unrestricted access for all wishing to pay respects.

  • Visiting Hours: The tomb area generally welcomes visitors daily. We recommend checking local notices for exact times, but general hours are usually from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

  • Respectful Attire: You must wear polite and modest clothing (covering knees and shoulders) when visiting the General’s tomb. The guards actively enforce this rule to ensure solemnity. Also, remember to maintain silence and avoid taking photos in restricted areas to show proper reverence.

  • Getting There: The site is located approximately 65 kilometers north of Đồng Hới City center. Travelers use National Route 1A heading north. After passing the Hoành Sơn Pass area and a few kilometers into Quảng Đông Commune, you will see clear signs directing you off the main road toward the coast (about 2-3 km) to the burial site.

The tomb of General Vo Nguyen Giap is now managed by the family, so it is very convenient to visit and is only received during office hours. Visitors must register and clearly state the information of the group's origin, representative, number of people...

A very strange beach with rows of rocks I have never seen before. Although not as beautiful as other famous beaches, there are very beautiful photo angles. Especially the road leading to it is also very beautiful. And this is the resting place of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
